Eh--I don't know about that. There are lots of movies that are
undeniably classics: Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane, Lawrence of
Arabia; simply disliking them isn't enough to discredit them from
being classics. I'm not a fan of GWTW, for instance, but I'm not
gonna claim it's not a classic. (CK and LoA are two of my favorites
though.)
Metroid, Zelda and Super Mario Bros. ARE indeed classics, whether you
like them or not. They were beyond huge for the NES, and were at the
forefront of the post-Atari console explosion that has gone on
uninterrupted since.

There was the great console crash of 84 (85?) before NES came along
and re-energized the market. As someone who owned both the Atari 5200
(awesome but under appreciated) and Atari 7800 (blech) systems, I
remember those dark mid-80's days well.
What connection does Amstrad have to consoles? Was that a European
console? I had an Amstrad 286 PC back in 1990... worst piece of
proprietary crap I ever owned. I heard they were a popular
manufacturer in Europe.
The best thing about the 7800 is that it plays 2600 games. I still
have one hooked up for that reason. I also have an operational 5200
and an NES hooked up. The only console I've bought since the NES was
an Xbox (not counting a Game Boy which was a purchasing mistake). So
I'm no Nintendo fan boy, but arguing that those NES classics are
anything but is just silly.
