while I seriously doubt this guy knows anything more about Xbox2 than what
is already on the internet, I supposed there's a chance he heard one or more
pieces of info that might be true

Hey all,

So in my travels this weekend I came across a Microsoft employee and talked
him up about Xbox II... here are the facts I found out.

1) Hard Drive... Yes! There was some speculation that MS was going to take
the HD out to make it more difficult to Mod.

2) Flash based HD... Yes!!! It was told to me that the HD was going to be
flash based... small size fast access... BAM!

3) No Stupid Dongle DVD playback... Yes!!! The reason that the first Xbox
didn't have built in DVD playback is a simple one, Sony owns the
Intellectual Property rights for DVD playback. Nuf said...

4) Xbox II at E3... Hell Yes!!! There will be an Xbox II maybe more at E3
this year...

5) Xbox II release date announced at E3... another Hell Yes!!! MS will be
announcing a release date for Xbox II...

Now this is not like the "rumors" about IBM before these are hard cold facts
from the horses mouth...

Alex Albrecht Confirms Rumors Posted by lex_vc on 03.01. at 20:57
Alex Albrecht, a former employee of G4TechTV, maintains a typepad blog
on the internet that tells of his travels in the video game industry, since
he is still a respected figure. This is what he had to say today:

So as you can see he seems very confident in his facts, making me
think he found a very reliable source. As of now these should still be
classified as rumors, but they sound very promising!

My understanding is that the HD is the most expensive piece of the XBox.
This was why Microsoft was thinking of dropping the HD from XBox2.

Flash based HD? Yes, I know such things exist, but my understanding is
that flash isn't cheap, nor is it durable when compared to a normal HD.
Fast - maybe. They aren't cheap compared to normal HD's, nor as durable
with regards to the number of times you can write to them. Flash memory
is great for applications where you ocassionally write to the chips, but
read often - such as a digital camera or MP3 player. But as a HD, they'll
get written to almost constantly. Flash chips have a lifetime limit of
how many times they can be written to. After that, the transistors making
up the bits get "stuck", meaning you won't be able to write new
information to them anymore.

So I'm confused by Microsoft's rumored decision to replace the HD with a
flash-based storage solution - unless Microsoft only intends to use it to
save user data (game saves) as compared to how the HD was used in the
XBox1. Even then, I don't understand why Microsoft wouldn't just go and
make required memory cards like Sony and Nintendo already do.

That's not entirely correct... Yes, Sony is part of the consortium that
owns the rights for DVD playback, and every device needs to pay a
licensing fee to the consortium - even Sony, though as a consortium member
they get a discount.

Still doesn't explain why Microsoft didn't just suck up the estimated
$5/Xbox for the licensing fee and offer DVD playback out-of-the-box like
Sony did.

I'd certainly hope so! Isn't XBox2 due out this year?

The flash-based HD thing makes me pause a bit. Especially since there's
still the rumor that there's going to eventually be 3 different XBox2's:
One without a HD, One with a HD, and some sort of Xbox2/Windows-Media-PC
combo product (which will definitely have at least 1 HD.)
