Can anyone recommend any good head-to-head games for the GBA.

Looking for recent releases any type of game.

Before I answer your question, I'll note that this post is off-topic here;
try alt.games.video.nintendo.gameboy.advance . Anyway, you might try Zelda:
Four Swords, the two Advance Wars games, Mario Kart, and Pokemon. All of
those are good games that allow you to compete with someone else over the
link cable.
