I considering myself the biggest Sega fan, but even I don't imagine that
the Sega's library is that far ahead of its competitors'. The hole in that
particular argument is that the shining stars of the Dreamcast library
have appeared on so many other consoles, and in most cases are completely
intact or even improved on. If you feel good about making a blanket
statement about all the games that were out for Dreamcast, you should also
have no problem making the same statement about Crazy Taxi and PSO on
Gamecube, or Shenmue on Xbox, or Headhunter on PS2.

About the portable Dreamcast? I don't think that the appearance of such a
beast would be a positive indicator of any kind of business thinking. The
CDX and Nomad, as portable versions of Sega CD and Genesis/Megadrive
hardware were really neat and represented a great use of technology. But I
also think that Sega released those devices without any thought as to
whether or not people wanted them or would spend money on them. It's my
opinion that similar thinking (or lack thereof) has gone into the next
generation of handheld game devices.

Remember that we're still the minority in the game market. Maybe less than
five percent of that market are self-proclaimed hardcore gamers, the ones
with stacks of unplayed RPGs and hand-drawn level maps and ten different
controllers for each console. The people making the bulk of the buying
decisions are kids and their parents, and they respond to marginally more
logical market urges like low prices and advertising hype. These are not
the people who would have thought that a portable disk-media game system
was viable four or five years ago.

-KKC, who owns multiple units of each Saturn controller and joystick and
steering wheel, but none that are colored white or grey to go with his
Japanese-region console. On another day, I'd be very unhappy about that.
