Does anyone like this game? I'm trying to decide whether I should give it
a shot.

That's very disappointing. I still might give it a try (it is Squaresoft,
sort of), but I won't expect a "Secret of Mana" level of quality anymore.
Maybe they should have released Seiken Densetsu 3 on the GBA instead; that
game was really good. It was a Japan-only SNES sequel to Secret of Mana.

BTW, Sword of Mana was developed by a group of former Squaresoft employees
called Brownie Brown. They made Magical Vacation, which apparently is
staying in Japan.

I played this one for a while on the SNES. I liked it. For some reason, I
never finished it. I think it started getting harder and I quit and started
playing something else!

Let us know how you like it. I might be interested in getting a copy!

Actually, you played Secret of Mana (which rocked). Sword of Mana is a
remake of Final Fantasy Adventure on the original Game Boy (which wasn't
bad).

That said, I bet you'd like Sword of Mana; the combat and art style are
similar to Secret of Mana. I haven't played Sword, but how could they go
wrong?

Basically because it isn't really like Secret of Mana at all. That game was
amazing, and I can still clearly remember being very disappointed when I was
done with it. This game, on the other hand, isn't as much of an RPG as it is
just an action game that looks like Secret of Mana.

Yeah, don't expect the same as Secret of Mana, but it's still a good game,
and it's nice playing a game that reminds me of Secret of Mana, even if just
in graphics.

Preston - I got it yesterday, and have ut ~40 minutes into it so far (game
save/load has a timer) ... which is a lot for me in one day for a GBA game.
I find it very engaging and enjoyable so far. Good balance of story and
action.

One thing - the monsters respawn in areas at an alarming rate ... just
trying to 'rest' to regain your MP will guarantee some respawning - which is
OK, since you get more XP for it, and as a CRPG-er I'm an admitted XP whore
;)

.... BTW - nice to see you on yet another Usenet forum, Preston (remember
me?!?)

Of course I do. Assuming you're "the" Michael Anderson from the now
defunct world of Handheld PCs.

I do - I paid less than $10 on eBay, and it is well worth it so far. I got
somewhat used to the 'console RPG' style through Shining Soul II, and this
is even more of that (certainly compared to BG DA), but it still seems very
well done. I'll keep you posted.

Please do. I've been on the fence about this game for some time. It looked
Zelda-like, but then it got bad ratings and I wasn't sure if that was just
that it didn't meet up to Secret of Mana standards and thus it was a
disappointment or if it was just average overall. Someone in one review
mentioned the L button (used for jumping) being a strain on his hand. This
concerned me particularly because I'm a computer programmer so I try to
play games that DON'T put a strain on my hand.

Yeah, funny, isn't it. I haven't been hovering around those groups much
because I have a Palm now that just works. And now that I'm a Linux-head
(i.e. no Windows in my house) I use a Palm full time because it syncs
best. If someone would write ActiveSync for Linux (I know they're working
on it, but it's by no means done) I'd consider an HPC again, to be honest.
But last time I checked HP was done making those, which is truly sad. And
I don't think you could find a 720 (what I consider the greatest handheld
ever) new again. Bummer, the whole thing.
