after losing my GBA sp on a plane, i decided to replace it..now im back into
the gba scene again, I am deciding to try out the 'advance wars' games.
which is better? advance wars 1 or advance wars 2?
Do you need to have played advance wars 1 to get the most out of advance
wars 2?

No, you don't need AW1 to get the most of out AW2. AW1 Has a better
tutorial, but otherwise you can start up with AW2 just fine.
That said, I think the balance is better in AW1. Plus AW2 doesn't add that
much. So in my opinion AW1 is the game to get. It may be impossible to
find it new or even used, so you may be stuck with AW2, which would be
perfectly fine. But if I could only get one, I'd get AW1.
And then later I'd pick up Fire Emblem. Fire Emblem is very similar except
it's an RPG and it's swords, axes and lances instead of soldiers, tanks
and choppers. It's definitely similar, though. And very very fun.

Fire Emblem was very enjoyable, but be warned, there is enough text dialog
in that game to make the bible look like a kiddie bed-time story. Although
to its credit, it is very well-written and intelligent dialog.
