Why, though. It got such bad reviews, so I'm torn.

Hi Preston:
I've also hesitated for the same reasons ... I was (am) hoping someone will
enlighten us further.
I like Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and Shining Soul II - how does it compare
to those?

And for my part I'm really digging DragonBall Z: Legacy of Goku II (even
though I've never seen an episode of the show). So I'm looking for some
more action/rpg gaming goodness.

can't compare. Sword of many is a real RPG, and is similar in a way to
zelda. SS2 and BG are just hack and slash.

Ok, I've played all 3 games, but have finished none Anyway, my
take is that I like and enjoy all 3, but Sword of Mana is a very
different "style" of game then the other 2.
SoM is a true Japanese RPG. Unlike SS2, you just don't jump in and
level up - you have to progress through the story line (which is
decidedly Japanese). What I mean by that, is that the story doesn't
always make total sense due to being translated, but it's still a nice
little story with some interesting twists and such. But it can
definitely be hard to follow sometimes.
The combat in SoM is similar to the other games, that is it is
realtime. You don't really have "classes" like the other games, but
rather your "class" changes with the level up decisions you make in
SoM. I recommend checking the FAQ on www.gamefaqs.com if your class
is important to you. However, all "classes" in SoM can use magic, and
your magic spells actually act differently based on what weapon you
have equipped.
If you think you would enjoy a game with an actual story that's more
complex than SS2 and BG:DA, and you can handle the quirks of a real
Japanese RPG, then I suggest getting SoM.

So you'd recommend it again? How frequent are the visual quirks I've read
about? Sprite tears, etc.

Bad reviews? Most places gave it an average review which is around 7 out of 10.
Sure it's not great, but that's not that bad either.

It's a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure from the original Game Boy. If you
liked that or Secret of Mana, you'd probably like Sword of Mana. Haven't
played it, though, so I couldn't say. FFA wasn't too bad for an early GB
game.
SIDE NOTE: Final Fantasy Adventure is actually part of the Seiken Densetsu
series (translates to Holy Sword; Seiken Densetsu 2 was released as Secret
of Mana). That's why it was renamed "Sword of Mana" for the remake.

I'd go ahead and try it. I was a little unsure too, because of the average
reviews, but I had a lot of fun playing it anyway. I actually enjoyed SS2
more for some reason, although SoM seems like the deeper, more involved
game. I kind of gave up on the final boss battle though, because it took so
long and I just lost the will to play it again. But the game itself is fun
to go through, although it is still more hack'n'slash than RPG, I would say.

Thanks, I'll probably give it a try. I was looking on eBay, and found a
few. Why is it that so many come from Hong Kong? I have been told never to
trust those - and I don't trust anyone who labels Hong Kong as 'US' just to
get in through eBay's location filter.

Yes, I would recommend it, provided you understand the differences I
explained above and the game still sounds interesting.
I noticed the graphical glitches, but I never felt like it detracted
from the overall experience.

Oh yeah, that too. They seem to happen to the golden statues (save points)
when you are in a town, and sometimes to the NPCs in town. Annoying if you
stare at it, but not a game breaker. Would have been nice if it was fixed
though.

I would define BG as a cross between something like Sacred and NWN squeezed
for the GBA. Whereas SS2 is more just like Diablo for GBA.
I just grabbed Sword of Mana from eBay for pretty cheap ... I'll let you
guys know how I like it.

I'll have to think about it. I still have my reservations.

Yeah, don't expect the same as Secret of Mana, but it's still a good game,
and it's nice playing a game that reminds me of Secret of Mana, even if just
in graphics.
