Good place to find cart sizes?
|
|
| BelPowerslave 2005-04-21, 6:34 am |
| 'ello all,
I'm currently trying to find a good site for reliable Genesis cartridge
size specs(basically, how big the cart is: 4 meg, 8 meg, etc). I've
tried the VideoGame Museum, The Genesis Collective, VideoGame Hunter's
Oasis and a few others. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bel

If you want to do it this way, rather than using cart sizes, I can
rummage through my old Lamepros and get the cart sizes if you don't
already have them.

Yeah, they did that sort of thing all the time. Phantasy Star II and
Strider both had their meg sizes listed on their boxes, for example, and
Genesis print ads were littered with megabitial hyperbole...

I've found that the game mags of the early 90s often contradicted each
other when they listed cartridge sizes, so I've tried to use the most
widely-published or generally-accepted-to-be-true figures I can find.
Sometimes all the mags were wrong, too. For example, every mag in my
collection states that "Ghouls 'n Ghosts" is a 4 meg cartridge, but the
ROM size indicates otherwise...

Yeah, I remember it well. I think PSII was hyped as being one of the first 6 meg
carts, then, of course, Strider was the first-ever 8 megger.

Yeah, I have noticed a lot of mags giving off different no's. I'm guessing they
figured that most people didn't care enough about how big a cart was to take notice.

Hmmmmm, that's interesting. How big is GnG? I always thought it was a 4 meg cart as
well...

Yeah, I've got a crapload of GamePro and EGM's I need to re-sift through, and pay
special attention to the listings for. What I'll probably do is go with that
first, then maybe post a list of what I lack, then I can hit the roms.

| Which games? I used to dump games and I never encountered a dumpsize
that varied from the advertised size. For example, games like Altered
Beast and After Burner II (4 meg games) were always 512 kilobytes. 8
meg games were 1024, 16 meg games 2048, etc. I think Strider, the
first advertised 8 meg game, was 512 kilobytes. So, maybe later on in
the Genesis's life they tried to inflate the specs to sell more games?
I'm curious to know which games those might be.

| Welll, the list isn't as bad as I thought it'd be. This is about all I
lack on games I've actually reviewed, their cart sizes:
Genesis:
Art Alive
Magical Taruruuto kun
Growl
Golden Axe III
Predator 2
Snake Rattle n Roll
Slaughter Sport
Seperation Anxiety
Sailor Moon
Rockman MegaWorld
TMNT: TF
Super Mario World
Valis
32X:
Spiderman: WoF
Virtua Fighter
Tempo
Shadow Squadron
Metal Head
Knuckles Chaotix
Sega Master System:
Rastan
Game Gear:
Psychic World
Jurassic Park
GG Shinobi
I'll be sifting through those old mags, again, seeing if I can come up
with anything. In the meantime, if anyone knows, just off the top of
their head(don't put any actual effort into it) what some of the cart
sizes are for the above mentioned titles, go ahead and post'em.

It's not listed on the box, and I just looked in the manual, which doesn't

Sega claimed PSII was the first 6 meg game in its print ad. It also had
a big "6 mega" design on the front of its box and everything

So did I, but judging from the ROM size and various other tidbits of
info I could get off the net it seems GnG was actually a 5 megabit game.
I have no idea why Sega didn't hype the game's size, as that would have
made it the biggest Genesis cartridge available until PSII came out.
That being said, I always thought they managed to cram a ton of stuff
into Ghouls 'n Ghosts compared to some of the other 4 meg Genesis launch
titles (like Altered Beast or Super Thunder Blade). Maybe they didn't
have to cram as hard as I thought!

| Not sure how much help this will be, but the rom size for Art Alive is
128kb, which equates to 1 megabit.

That's interesting. I wonder...did Sega ever do any 1 meg carts...or did
they really waste an entire 4 meg cart on that game...

Yup, I remember it. For most games I think it's just hype for the sake of hype, but for
an RPG, size really does matter, so I think it was intelligent of Sega to hype its size
at the time.

Wow, I wonder if it really is a 5 meg cart...that'd be just too wild. Jonathan
mentioned, in another thread, that Art Alive is only 512k, which makes me wonder if they
put it on a 1 meg cart, or actually wasted a 4 meg cart on that.

Well, maybe their compression rate or some slick use of graphics resources allowed them
to get a lot more out of GnG's 4 meg cart than it did for AB, etc. Who knows...;)

| I was digging around my old files and I found a useful utility for
determining the actual ROM size versus the filesize of the ROM. I
checked out the Ghouls and Ghosts ROM and the filesize was just over 1
megabyte, which might indicate an 8 megabit game. When I ran the
useful utility, called UCON, it actually told me that the game itself
was 5 megabits. So Bel, this might be another resource for you in case
you have difficulty with certain games. Let me know if you can't find
it and I'll email it to you or something.
