New Sega Stuff from the latest shopping spree...

| 'ello all,
Though it's not a lot, I thought I'd post some thoughts on a few games I
picked up the other day.
Wonder Dog, Sega CD - $4, CD only. XXXXing impressive! I've always
wanted to try this one, but not hearing *anything* about it, I just
figured it was either horrid, or just not really that great. I am
utterly shocked at how good this is! The graphics are excellent, the
music is great, the gameplay is fun and friendly. Very cool. Anyone else
play this one?
Psycho Fox, SMS - $3.90, complete. I'm sort of "meh" on this one. The
control is kind of lacking, especially with the fact that without any
momentum PF can't jump worth a crap. Seems like everything can kill you
in one hit. It is colorful...maybe I'll give it another shot...anyone
else try this one?
Mortal Kombat, GG - $4.90, cart only. I used to have this one back when
I had my first GG unit. I am still shocked at A) How great this game
looks, B) How well it actually plays C) It was done by the shame of the
programming community, Probe and finally D) That it seems to have more
animation than the damn Genesis version(even Scorp. and Sub have their
different standing poses unlike the shitty Genesis version). Gotta get
around to punching in the blood code...
X-Men, GG - $4.90, cart only. Even though part 2(Mojo's World) has
better graphics and much larger characters, I still think this one plays
much better. Wish they didn't have the limited mutant powers...but maybe
my good friend Mr. GG Game Genie(or Mr. GGGG) can solve that one for me.
Is it me, or is Wolverine's mask greatly exhaggerated in this version!?
Dragon Crystal, GG - $4.90, cart only. Always, always, always wanted to
play this one...even when I had my first GG, but could A) Never afford
it or B) Never find it. Well, I found it...and I can afford it but(and
get ready for it) it *doesn't* work. Looks like one of the contacts
is really rusted, and no amount of cleaning will get it off. Going to
take it back and probably get another GG title....damn....

Well, I still have no idea what the game is... Actually, I couldn't tell
from your entries what ANY of the games were about...

You may not like this one a lot, unless you're into the Rogue-like RPG
titles. The worst part of Dragon Crystal is that there is no save
function, not even a rudimentary password resume feature. A game like this
is definitely better enjoyed in an emulator that supports save states. You
may be interested to know that Fatal Labyrinth for the Genesis is pretty
much a straight port of this game, except without the annoying sidekick.

Why is Probe the shame of the programming community ?? All their games &
conversions that I played were quite good.
Alien 3 I quite liked...

Figured this would be lies, as there are no _new_ Sega games to be
bought. :/ :p

No, but this got the kind of Halverson praise that has always made me
suspicious about it. I've always figured that I'd pick it up if I could
find it cheap enough, but it's never a priority in my head to actually
search for it individually. Always looked like nothing special from
screenshots... just a typical platformer for the time.

I like Psycho Fox okay, but mostly for the character. It was also one
of the few new and _original_ games for the Master System when
released, with most every other game being a watered-down Genesis
clone.

I had this when I had a Game Gear as well just because it was that
impressive. Don't forget that it is missing two characters, but the
sprite size makes up for it. Of course, being Mortal Kombat drags it
back down, but portable fighting fan beggers can't really be choosers,
can they? :^)

They do as little as possible, in the fastest amount of time to get their
"ports" out.

Have you played the original versions of these games!? Don't get me wrong, I
thought Alien Trilogy was pretty good on Saturn too....until I saw the PSX
version. Damn, it's like they pretty much just ported the code, and made a
few small changes and got it out the door in a week(as they usually do).

I'll give it to you there, Alien 3 is probably one of the only decent jobs
Probe has ever done(aside from MK on GG, above)...*but* it wasn't a
conversion. This one an actual, original programming job. Then, of course,
they turn around and make the SNES version....and all of the sudden the
Genesis version isn't so hot anymore. They've got a really bad habit of doing
shitty, shitty work on any given Sega system.

Well, unless you count the unbelievably overpriced shooters that are still
coming out for the DC...;)

Well, in terms of gameplay I guess it is pretty typical...I mean, you go
through the level, you shoot your little stars at the enemies, you end the
level, go to the next, etc. I think I'd deem it an exceptional platformer,
based on what I've played of it so far.

You got that right. Man, it was painful to see some of those Genesis games
on the SMS. Moonwalker was one that about made me cry....couldn't believe
the screen had to turn black anytime you did the dance routines...sad,
sad, sad.

Well, it would have been nice to have something along the lines of SF
Alpha, like the GBC got...but Fatal Fury 2 and Sam. Shodown do a pretty
good job on the GG.

Hmmmmm, that's depressing...the screenshots always made it seem so decent. Ah
well, maybe it's for the best. Perhaps I'll run across it again at some point
in the future.

Well, there's Feel the Magic on the DS, Virtua Quest came out last month
in the US for the Gamecube, Sega Superstars on the PS2 in (December or
November), Alien Front on the Ngage last month,
(Hey according to GameFAQs, Chaos Field was developed and published by
Sega; which house?)

With the historical frame of reference, one could argue that Psycho Fox
was Sega's ham-fisted attempt at a counter to Super Mario 3. Likewise
Golden Axe Warrior to Zelda.
To me, the most painful Genesis->SMS ports were Altered Beast and Golden
Axe. I actually thought Moonwalker held up pretty well! =)

I assumed Ben was talking about new Sega games on the classic consoles(DC
included), not their stuff on non-Sega consoles. I could have been wrong on
that one...but that's what I was thinking...of course, I guess I also could
have added in the overpriced Sega CD products that are out now as well. ;)

Oh man, yeah, AB was *horrid* on the SMS...I about passed out when I saw it. It
reminded me of the tragedy that was Shadow Dancer on the SMS. ;)
