Sawing off the back of the Power Base Converter...
|
|
| BelPowerslave 2005-02-17, 5:49 pm |
| 'ello all,
I just recently bought Psycho Fox, complete, for a mere $3.90...which
brings my glorious SMS collection up to a whole *4* games! As I'd really
like to play it, and the few others I have...I am considering sawing off
the back of the PBC so it can lay on the Genesis 2 unit I use just for
my Mega CD 2(modded) unit. The 32X is on the Genesis 1(with my Sega CD 1
unit) and I hate to take off the 32X every time I want to play an SMS
game(which is why I don't play them that often). Would sawing off the
back of the PBC be a particularly bad thing...in terms of its life and
whatnot?
Right now, I take the entire board out of the PBC and put it, bare, into
the Genesis 2 unit and it runs games fine...but I hate to do it...it
looks really ugly, and I just don't like it exposed to dust and anything
else. My dad has a pretty extensive set of power tools, and I'm sure I
could find something that would make the cut pretty clean...I'm just
wondering, for the techies out there, is this particularly dumb, or
would this be alright?
Thanks in advance,
Bel

Quick follow up: By "the back" of the PBC, I mean that small bit that you
can use to screw the PBC into Genesis 1 units...not that actual back of the
entire PBC unit.

Bel, where have you been? The true Sega fan owns fifty SMS games that he
never plays. In my case, I even own two pairs of the 3D shutter glasses,
and I'm blind in an eye so I can't even use them. But I digress...

There are no functional components in that back panel, since as you've
discovered all the electronics are right there around the cart slots.
However, it's just plain ugly and it's not a very tight fit. In your
shoes, I would blow an extra $15 on an extra first-run Genesis Model I for
the purpose of mounting the PBC on top of it. It may not be particularly
conservative to do so, but it's fun.
Can I ask, what's the issue with plopping the 32x on the Genesis II
instead? Better fit, and depending on who you ask it might be more
compatible. That's a whole other can of worms I don't feel like discussing
right now though...

| Just get a real SMS system. Don't ruin the PBC. Seriously. :-)
Then again, you would be able to sell it later on, on eBay as "R@RE Power

trying to use the PBC like Sega originally intended: On a Genesis unit, thus
not needing an actual SMS. I may just stick with using the bare circuit
board...I don't know. Psycho Fox isn't exactly as wonderful as I had
hoped...

HEhehhee, well, I never did actually own an SMS...though I borrowed one from
a buddy, and about 30 games or so with it. It rocked...so I immediately went
out and got a PBC...it was nice, until the 32X came out...

Yeah, I'm trying to stick with just the Genesis(or is that "Genesi") units
I've got now. ;) If I could just get it to fit on the Genesis 2, it'd be
perfect. I'd almost attempt to try to find that PBC2 thing that fits on
Genesis 2 units, but I think I remember Tim Miller talking about how
impossibly hard they were to find.

Well, the Genesis 2 is only used to make the Mega CD 2 unit(which is modded)
actually work. See, because the MCD2 unit is modded, I can use a US Genesis 2
and it will still allow me to play Mega CD games...that's pretty much all
it's used for...I guess, though, that I could put the 32X on it...but then,
32X CD games wouldn't work(it won't play any US Sega CD games)...not that
there are virtually any 32X games I'd actually play...but...
Bel, trying to get rid of his Shit64...er Nintendo64 and 8 games...and ram
expansion and memory pack, one controller, all hookups....for around
$60....just enough for the used GameCube. ;)

If you want to use/play the PBC as Sega originally intended for it to be
used, then I'm afraid you must attach it to the Genesis 1. :-) Or perhaps
you have some inside information about PBC, which I don't?
Bel opens an old EGM and reads an interview with Hayao Nakayama to me:
EGM: Mr. Nakayama, the PBC really seems like a neat product that offers full
backwards compatibility with the old SMS game cartridges, however would this
product fit onto any upcoming, perhaps slimmer and more sleek looking
Genesis system?
Nakayama: Of course! One can slice off the end of it with a katana sword and
easily fit, that is if there should be any design incompatibilities!

They are indeed very difficult to find. But I've now got two (due to two
coming on eBay at the same time and me winning both auctions ...)
I'd sell one to you, but have no idea how much you'd be willing to pay!
Bear in mind that it's boxed, but it's a European version so has bright red
bits on it. Oh, and the top flap's missing.

That's a lot for $60 - I'm surprised you're having trouble selling it ...

Well, that's just it though...the 32X pretty much kills that. To stay as close
to it as possible though, I was trying to fit it on the Genesis 2 or X'eye. The
X'eye is an option that I may look into...right now I mainly use my Genesis
1/Sega CD 1/32X combo for all my Genesis/Sega CD/32X needs...but fitting the
X'eye with the 32X could replace the old "series 1" models and free them up for
the PBC...

That does it, I'm buying a sword tomorrow! ;)

Will the Euro version work with a US Genesis 2?

I haven't even tried to sell it just yet...going to probably post it on ebay
or something at some point this week. Will be nice, *if* I can get
$60...that's my GC money...then I can sell some other stuff(maybe some GG
games) and try to get as close as I can to another $50 for the GBA Player.

I'd think so. There's not a lot of electronics in the convertor, just
some wires which change over the paths. And I don't think Master System
games were region locked either.
I could be wrong though.

Ok, will keep it in mind. Going to try a few different things...see how they
work out. If nothing makes me happy, I'll email you...maybe we can work out a
price.

| Another option would be to get a Master Gear to play SMS games on the
GG. Some games that depend on text can be a bit fuzzy (curse you
Wonder Boy and your stone-age password style saving), but I never had
any issues playing Psycho Fox or other such games.

I used to have a MGC back when I had the GG...played a lot of Rastan and
Phantasy Star on it. Got another one after I got another GG, but sadly
it was broken. Will probably get one at some point down the line...
In terms of the PBC issue, I think I'll try to get another Genesis 1
unit and plug it into the modded Mega Drive 2 unit...that'd take care of
everything right there...and I'd have a spare Genesis 2....for, perhaps,
some lucky individual. ;)
