Author Genesis model 2 question, Genesis model 1 question

Hi all. I have a question about the compact model two Genesis systems
that I once had the answer to. There are different model 2's: the
original and a later version that used a different video output chip.
You can tell the two versions apart by turning them over and looking
through the plastic grill at the bottom. The original model 2 Genesis
had a RF shield that covered the entire grill, I believe, and the 2nd
revision has a RF shield that only covers about half of it. Anyone
know what I'm talking about? Could someone tell me the specific model
numbers for both?

Also, I thought NES AC adapters were supposed to work with the
original Genesis (volume lever model). I've tried two of them with my
Genesis I (which I unfortunately have no AC adapter for) and they
don't work. The unit powers on but the screen is all scrambled and
doesn't go beyond the Sega license display.

Thanks,

dandy

Sega Genesis 1 uses power adaptor number 1602. The output rating of power
adaptor 1602 is 9V DC 1.2A. The polarity of the adaptor appears to be sleeve
= positive, hole (tip) = negative.

Verify that the adaptor in use is a suitable replacement for Sega power
adaptor 1602. (Or try to locate a used power adaptor 1602.)

The NES AC adapter is not, and continued use of an NES AC adapter will fry his
Genesis and will also cause severe damage to a Sega CD.

As stated, the Genesis AC adapter requires 9 volts of DC power.

The NES adaptor outputs 9 volts of *AC* power. This is why the Genesis adapter
has a polarity rating while the NES adapter does not. DC flows in one
direction only while AC can oscillate in both directions.

While the Genesis adapter has the step down transformer plus the necessary
components to convert 60 Hz AC into smooth 9 volts of DC (bridge rectification,
power condensors, etc.), the NES does the AC-DC conversion within the console
itself. The wall wart for the NES is just a step down transformer that brings
down 120 volts of AC down to 9 volts, nothing more. - Reinhart

DO NOT USE AN NES ADAPTER WITH YOUR GENESIS!

The NES adapter puts out **AC** power at 9 volts, which will damage your
Genesis.

The older Genesis consoles requires 9 volts of **DC** power at negative
polarity.

Newer Genesis consoles requires 9-10 volts of **DC** power at positive
polarity.

READ THE POWER SPECIFICATIONS OF THE ADAPTER AND COMPARE THAT TO THE
REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR CONSOLE!

DO NOT USE ADAPTERS THAT DO NOT COMPLETELY MATCH THE REQUIREMENTS!

Sorry for typing all CAPS, but this is EXTREMELY serious if you want to keep
your Genesis working! Remember, Genesis consoles are not made anymore, so take
steps to protect your equipment!

The same also applies to the SEGA CD.

To reiterate, DO NOT USE NES ADAPTERS WITH YOUR SEGA EQUIPMENT! - Reinart

So what you're trying to say is, the NES adapter probably won't work - right?

:P

Sorry, couldn't resist! In all seriousness, if I had a console that was, in
effect, irreplacable, I wouldn't plug in *anything* until I knew for sure
that it was the right supply...

It WILL NOT work, and you risk damaging your Genesis if you try to use an NES
adapter since the NES adapter puts out AC when your Genesis requires DC. -

Thanks everyone for all the info. I had to break down and buy a Gen I
specific adapter off of eBay, though it was more than I wanted to pay.
Hope I didn't already damage my console -- I tried NES adapters twice
with it. Don't worry Reinhart: I won't do it ever again!
