I have to agree. The dues and tournament fees are ridiculous. Even for
places that have "Saturday Tournaments" they want $30+ for a couple of
rounds, and the price is the same or maybe $5. less for kids. So I can take
my kids to a Saturday tournament that has maybe 2 hours of guaranteed "fun"
and spend $200+ for fees and dues, or I can take them to a Pro Football,
Baseball, Ice Capades, or alot of other events that will cost the same price
but have alot more excitement and fun for kids (and me).

Back when I was a kid, I was introduced to chess because tournaments were
often free or low-priced so that anybody could participate (especially
kids).

The USCF has priced itself out of existence. The next generation of kids
that have only played chess for free on the internet or via Chessmaster are
not going to fork over $50. so they can get a crappy magazine. The internet
chess forums already have rankings (for free).
