| He's had his chances in various roles. When I started into politics he
was Vice President and Don Schultz was Vice President. The
organization started having the wheels come off as that is the year
that Al Lawrence left and was also the last year that USCF ran
profitably.
I don't really think Bill is responsible for the decline of adult
chess. I think that adult chess was clearly starting to decline in
popularity in 1996.
I don't think anyone knows nor will anyone ever know the exact reasons
why, but some kind of a paradigm change occurred and those who ran USCF
failed to recognize it or address it and now it's WAY too late in my
opinion for it to ever be the same.
Actually the nasty political squabbling, territorialism and petty
quarrelling that went on back then is still going on today.
I find it somewhat ironic that after everything that has gone on, that
Bill and Don have merely exchanged hats and offices.
When Don was President the USCF lost the most money it ever had up to
that point in one year. Don gave us a graph that tried to paint the
picture in a more flattering way but the losses were impossible to
explain away on paper.
Of course the Niro debacle of 2003, made Don's regime look thrifty by
comparison. ) Still it is ironic to see the voters put Bill and Don
back in charge considering their record/performance when they were last
in charge.
