| Thanks for that reply, Bruce, as this"demonization" and, I suppose, the
"angelication"(??) of "The Goich" has always confused me.
He has been blamed for the decline in adult chess, but it seems to me
that the folks who do so cannot separate cause and effect. In fact, I
always enjoyed playing in a "Goich" event, and actively sought them
out, even when it was something odd like an Open in Iowa in which I had
a blast (drawing IM Donaldson, probably the height of my chess
experience; I beat one once, but it wasn't Donaldson, if you get my
drift...) and I paid a lot of money to do so, with few illusions of
winning any.
But yes he does seem to be a bit "The USCF My Way." But who else is
doing the work effectively? Randy Bauer was, but we voted him out (one
that to me speaks against chess players being intelligent - the guy
knew how to be fiscally responsible in a time when that was what we
exactly needed). Beatriz has gone from hero to zero in nothing flat
somehow; so who else is there?
I think he is a successful guy who loves chess and the USCF, but has
warts like us all. In other words, call him human. And he can say "I
was almost an International Master" and be telling the truth! He is a
titled player who is also a successful organizer and no doubt loves the
USCF. So I say, "why not Bill?" If there is better, come forward and do
the job....
