I am shocked by this posting and I feel that it may sound the death
knell of Elizabeth Shaughnessy as a viable candidate, because Mike
Goodall was the last of the staunch defenders of Shaughnessy in
Northern California, where she lives.
Shaughnessy was elected in August 2004 by a wide margin, but almost
all of her support came from Northern California.
Since then, one-by-one, the Northern California chess organizers who
got her elected turned against her.
First was Richard Peterson, her Treasurer.
Later, for entirely different reasons, first John Donaldson and later
Michael Aigner turned against her.
However, throughout all this, Mike Goodall, who is ex-President of the
Northern California Chess Association and who has directed more chess
tournaments than anyone else in California, has been her staunch
supporter.
Now, with Goodalls surprising switch, I do not see how she can be
elected. Her only remaining support comes from her association with
the so-called Success Team. However, that alone is probably not enough
to get her elected. In addition, she embarrassed herself by speaking
in support of the BrainSpeed pills at the National Open in Las Vegas.
In my view, the best thing she can do for herself is withdraw from the
race. When Elizabeth Shaughnessy first ran last year, she enjoyed a
sterling reputation. Everybody held her in the highest regard,
including me.
Now, her reputation is in fast fall, rapidly descending to zero. The
best thing that can be said about Elizabeth Shaughnessy is that she is
a rubber-stamp for Beatriz Marinello. Even if she is elected, she is
held in such low regard that it will only make her reputation worse.
