| I'm a newbie here but this looks like a friendly board!
I'm involved in a permanent long-term going beyond the grave chess battle
with a buddy of mine in North Carolina. We, um, can't seem to stop playing.
We even have a little web page where we keep score, make comments, and,
well, I'm sure you guys understand. The more we play the more we need to
play . . .
We've been using Ice Chess from www.iciclecreek.com for a long time. The
author of the software stopped supporting and developing it. I guess he lost
the source code.
This program has everything we need. First, it has a nice small grey board
with easy to see 2-D pieces. It won't let you make illegal moves. It's
'smart', to a degree. Second, when you send your move it invokes your e-mail
program and automatically attaches a .chb file to the e-mail. Then you send
the e-mail and the recipient double clicks the attachment and loads up Ice
Chess.
It has low graphics requirements. This is important since I often connect in
to my Terminal Server while I'm in the field doing computer consulting work.
Terminal Server only supports 256 colors. Ice Chess has a feature that lets
you click back through the moves of a game which works fairly well. However,
a "replay" of the game often results in errors as to what really happened.
I've looked and looked all over the Net but can't seem to find something to
replace Ice Chess. Ice Chess doesn't always work with Outlook XP or 2003 so
we're running into trouble.
We tried Chess Rally 2 but the pieces are not to my liking. More
importantly, Chess Rally 2 requires high res graphics and Terminal Server
doesn't support over 256 colors.
So, I'm looking for a simple, 'light', program that lets us send e-mail
attachments via Outlook which we can double click, open up, and play. There
are times when our games will be on hold for a day or two or longer so a
'real-time' solution doesn't work.
Thank you for any and all comments and possible solutions!
