I think, by other means, we see how close FIDE was identified with politics
of the Soviet Union. But I don't think Karpov could have beeen incarcerated
or even demoted - they were too afraid of him defecting.

That's pragmatic! I think Dave Richerby is mainly in the right of it, and
Karpov's Komplaint would not have been noticed any more than any individual
/could be/ allowed to sway affairs of the collective.. OTOH, Larry Parr is
right by the same measure when he talks of sportsmanship, the lack of. Their
ain't a lot of that in power politics.
