I have read Larry Evans' column since it first appeared, or 1968, whichever
was later. It was a so-so to below so-so column. They dropped it. What's the
big deal?

Why do I not understand what all this fuss is about?

There is no intrigue here. No politics. No nothing, as they say in NJ. It
was a below-average column and they dropped it, which was good. If I were
editor of CL I would have asked Larry to change the format 20 years ago, or
take a hike. It is not unreasonable, after this long run, simply to ask him
to take a hike.

If he was writing such a great column let him go sell it somewhere else.
HAHAHAHAHA.

Angelo:

As far as I'm concerned, outside of Larry Parr (who has this deep infatuation
for Larry Evans) there is no fuss. Sure, Larry trumps out letters of people who
threaten to quit USCF if Evans is dropped. But most, if not all, of them will
either not follow through on their threat, or not renew for a short while and then
come back ... although don't expect LP to apprize us of that fact.

Writers get dropped. Fellow employees get laid off. Reminds me of when my
favorite news program had a change of management ... who then fired or
reassigned many of my favorite personalities. I decided never to watch that
program again. But in a short while I came back - the competition wasn't to my
liking. And in time I forgot about the old players and learned to like the new ones.

That's life.

The big deal is mainly in the mind of Larry Parr, who worships at the
Evans shrine like some provincial Roman praying to a statue of Caesar,
and regards Evans' firing as the most heinous assassination since 44
BC. More reasonable people take such things in stride.
A somewhat analogous situation occurred when Edward Winter's "Chess
Notes" was discontinued by New In Chess. I wrote one letter to NIC,
expressing disagreement with the decision, then let the matter go. I
did not accuse NIC of stupidity, corruption or political bias, nor did
I hint at sinister cabals acting behind the scenes. I have some
contacts at NIC, but I never bothered them about it, nor did I make any
ruckus on the rgc groups. Winter landed on his feet elsewhere, and
Chess Notes continued.
In contrast, Parr seems to regard the termination of Evans' column as
a tragedy worse than the Titanic, a blunder worse than the Edsel, a
scandal worse than Teapot Dome, a strong-arm political power play worse
than Stalin's purges, and the work of secret evil-doers exacting a
long-sought cloak-and-dagger vengeance. And he'll keep on making a fuss
as long as anyone will listen, or more likely, far longer.

Because you do not think like Larry Parr.
