August rating list no good

| Just got an email from ED Bill Hall, saying that the printed August
rating list is incorrect and should not be used. It seems Mr. Hall's
message was sent to all TDs and affiliates who are registered at the
TD/Affiliate area.
Does anyone know how this happened? Is it related to the incorrect
floors assigned to some players that Mike Nolan mentioned in another
thread?
This is a new one in my experience. Should be lots of fun for TD's who
are not online or who never check the Internet and email. Yes, I know a
couple of those....

No, this has nothing to do with floors. It's a 'computer error', probably
a result of entering the wrong date in the program that generates the PDF
file for the rating supplement.
It might be more accurate to characterize the August printed supplement
as being irrelevant than incorrect. It appears that everyone listed in it
has their current published rating shown, but none of those ratings changed
as a result of events rated in May or June (e.g., since the preparation of
the June supplement). Conversely, no player whose rating DID change in May or
June is listed in the printed supplement.
The supplement files on the USCF website are correct, and MSA also has
the correct information.
A PDF of the corrected pages for the ratings supplement (all 78 of them)
is available on the USCF website at http://www.uschess.org/Aug2005supp.php

| OK, thanks for the explanation, Mike. Still I know at least one TD who
is fully competent to direct small Swisses and quads who will never be
able to figure this mess out in a zillion years, no matter how many
PDF's you send him via email....

In 25 years of working with computers, I have yet to see one make an
error; that is, do something contrary to the instructions programmed
into it. Every "computer error" I've ever seen was a human error, as
this one was if, as Mr. Nolan says, someone entered a wrong date.
