Bill Goichberg"
Tim Hanke did not participate in the most recent conference call last
week. Tim has been away training in the National Guard. I am in
contact with him, he knows about the result of the election.
I would like this opportunity to congratulate Bill Goichberg, Gregory
Shahade, Joel Channing and Robert Tanner for getting elected to the
Executive Board.
Although, I am a bit disappointed about the results of the election,
life goes on and I feel relieve that I will not have the responsibility
to be President of the USCF after August 14th. I do not take the
results of the election as a reflection of my performance as President.
I have been a very strong President and made very tough decisions in
one of the most critical moments of USCF's history. My first thought
after learning about the results of the election was that I now fully
understand what Boris Spassky experience when he lost the World
Championship title to Bobby Fischer. Years later, Spassky declared
that this was the best thing that could happen to him..Freedom is a
wonderful thing, for two years I have been thinking about what is best
for the USCF, now its time to think about what is best for Beatriz
Marinello.
We all love the USCF and hope for the best. I think that Channing,
Shahade and Tanner will be excellent Board members.
All the best,
Beatriz Marinello
USCF President

After the smoke clears, I think history will reflect well on your
leadership and administration. In 2003 it wasn't rhetoric. The USCF
was at the brink of bankruptcy. Your administration made the painful,
but absolutely necessary decisions to save the organization, and you
succeeded.
The office was right-sized, moved to an area with significantly lower
costs. An inefficient, money losing, and no longer necessary (for the
mission) B&E business was outsourced. You understood the need for
fiscal responsibility and your two terms resulted in a real (not
cooked) profit, as contrasted with the 1997-2003 timeframe where every
year there was a loss in operations with a total loss of roughly 1.7
million dollars.
Finally, you were the first USCF President, SFAIK, who understood and
explicitly stated that the USCF is in the information business. You
REALLY understood how vital it was for the USCF office to have
satisfactory information technology systems. Certainly, Mike Nolan
deserves huge credit for getting the job done, but without the support
of your administration, he would have never had the chance to shine.
Thank you so very much for that.
I truly hope you will be able to continue on the Board. We had two
resignations after the 2001 election, and three from the group which
was elected in 2001. I hope that trend does not continue with those
who were elected in 2003. However, if personal circumstances dictate
otherwise, I will certainly understand. In your instance I think we
have gotten far more you than what the typical board member devotes in
four years, probably a lot more.
Thank you again for everything you have done. It has been greatly
appreciated.
Best regards,
George John

Sorry for the error. I do believe that Tim has participated in some
fairly recent conference calls, though.

We have had substantial differences especially during the past year or
so, but there has never been any question that when USCF faced
bankruptcy in the summer of 2003, you provided the leadership needed to
avert this disaster. I hope that even though you will no longer be
devoting as much time to it, you will still be part of the team working
to guide and promote USCF in the coming years.

Weren't there four people just recently elected?

| Beatriz,
Thanks also for your Presidency during difficult times and, hopefully,
a productive continuation of your tenure on the Board.
Congratulations also to Bill, who has been handed a rather large
mandate, but has some very difficult decisions still to face. USCF
needs to continue to have strong leadership since there are still many
problems that need to be addressed in the near future.

First, congratulations to you Dan for winning a 2005 Cramer Award for
Excellence in Chess Journalism with your fine Chess Column.
Secondly, Beatriz will will be playing a key roll in the next
administration as hopefully will Randy Bauer. The election mandate
won't be used to dictate but rather to reach out. Confrontations will
be issue related and not personal.

| I would also like to congratulate the winning candidates. I think the
winning candidates in general conducted themselves well, and it is good to
have new ideas and leaders on the Board.
I am particularly pleased by the election of Joel Channing to the Board. I
think Joel will provide insight and experience as one who has served on
Boards of Directors and been involved in large budget and high profile
projects. The USCF Board needs to become more collaborative and less
partisan. I hope that he will be able to help represent this philosophy and
create a new sense of direction.
I leave comforted by the knowledge that the USCF's finances are in better
shape than when I began my Board service a year ago. As we get to a much
better position relating to ongoing revenues and expenses, the incoming
Board is in a much better position to work to grow the USCF and services for
its members.
I've been a USCF member for over 30 years and a volunteer for at least 20.
I will, as circumstances allow, continue those efforts now and in the
future.
All the best for the USCF,

I have never grumbled about the USCF so far as I can recall. In fact
the USCF is very similar to analogous organizations purporting to
regulate and promote games and sports. All of them reel from calamity
to calamity and from scandal to scandal. The reason is that they
attract a certain types of mediocrities, like you for example, who
find their fulfillment by occupying meaningless positions on
meaningless committees.
The reason I sometimes read this newsgroup is that the sheer absurdity
of it is entertaining.

As long as we're changing the subject, how about we discuss results from

the new guys' chops just yet. What to do when the bars are closed and
there's nobody to fight with? -- Randy Bauer
Honest Randy is correct to this extent: It does feel a bit like
a Sunday morning after a bender the night before.
Alas, no Brock, Booz, Bauer, Beatriz to kick around any more.
And how did those brassknuckles get on one's right hand anyway?
Whose blood? Whose hank of hair? The whole scene reminds one of Lon
Chaney, Jr. as the wolfman who wakes up the next morning wondering what
happened.

percentage of its citizens thought they should have a right to vote in

Sorry, I am missing the point. Did Patton beat up people on the
streets of Des Moines.
I agree that the treatment of Europe, and particularly of Germany,
after the war, is one of the very few great successes of U.S. foreign
policy in the last century. - What that has to do with the current
discussion is obscure ... unless it is this: You think I am German,
and therefore must have attitudes that you ascribe to Germans and you
ran out of ammunition, so now you are reduced to flinging dirt...
Were you always so dumb or is that what happens to people who stay in
Des Moines too long?

Jurgen, you really need to work on your insults -- this hardly even rises to the
level of sophomoric.
I hear Larry Parr is available by correspondance course. Check with your local
