The next big Phenom?

| In the past year, Hikaru Nakamura has gained quite the following in
the US, as the best prospect for high-level success in the chess
circuit. However, Fabiano Caruana has just achieved an IM norm. Caruana
is only 12 years of age, which is IIRC how old Nakamura was when he
achieved his first IM norm, at the Norm Factory event in Budapest. He
scored +7, and beat a couple of IMs--good enough for a Performance
Rating of 2487. Pretty impressive for a player rated only 2255 to
maintain over 13 rounds. Obviously, he is significantly underrated. I
believe that he is from New York, so I would not think that there is a
dearth of events where Caruana could play FIDE rated games. But,
clearly he is in Budapest for a reason.....
I wonder if Chandra Hawsa Koneru [IND 230] is any relation to GM
Humpy Koneru, who also played in the First Saturday event, but in the
GM Tournament?

Chandra is the younger sister of Humpy Koneru. Fabiano used to live in
NY. He is a very nice boy. His family moved to Europe some months ago
to give him more opportunities to play in serious competition. G/30 at
the Marshall just doesn't cut it.

Where is that great big New York Metro District organization when
you need it? Funded Mensa style it could offer at least some
interesting tournaments in NYC. I guess such an umbrella was never
established.. or maybe it pissed away all of its money on a chess
newsletter hoping that its editor could win a CJY award at the expense
of all other chess matters.

| Fabiano is a great kid and a phenomenal talent.
Not to take anything away from him, what is the point of an IM with a FIDE
rating of 2275? I tend to think of IMs as out of my striking range (assuming
I'm really lucky and they're playing badly). A 2275 rating is definitely
within my striking range.
In my opinion players with serious international aspirations should stay
away from the title mills. Becoming an IM through results in decent
tournaments that include very strong players is one thing. Getting the title
by slaughtering a field of over-rated, over-titled has-beens and second-rate
title mill graduates is meaningless to me.

Socialized tournament chess isn't going to fly.

Or maybe the federation doesn't want to practice socialism bordering on
communism.

Angelo,
I had always thought of the Hungarian tournaments as title mills, but
actually Tim Taylor's now-notorious article in CL made me reconsider.
Taylor gives more than one example of a tournament in which the
competition was ferocious and in the end _nobody_ got his desired norm.
It remains true, of course, that there are so many tournaments in
Budapest that the easiest way to get a norm is to spend a few months
there. But actually doing it is apparently no piece of cake. In the
light of Taylor's report, I'm inclined to give Caruana a lot of credit
for achieving an IM norm on what may have been his first Hungarian try.

While we're on the subject of Tim Taylor, many younger players are
probably unaware of the fact that in his prime (the early 80s if I
recall) he was not just a skin-of-the-teeth IM, he really was easily
strong enough to deserve the title. When he was properly booked up, he
was especially deadly on the White side of 1. d4 systems, with which he
scored quite a few impressive knockouts. He also wrote a couple of
pretty good tournament books and monographs on opening theory.
I see that he played in the HB tournament and finished with a
respectable 6-3, scoring 2-2 against his GM opponents.

| Larry,
You're mostly right. It's amazing that such a little kid could be so good.
But not all Hungarian tournaments are created equal. I don't believe that
opponent ratings among a field of unknowns are that reliable. Plus, there's
a reason why Fabiano is still rated just 2275.
I hope I'm totally wrong about this, and that he's simply gotten much
stronger since his last rating was posted. Even so, I wish he would obtain
his norms in real tournaments.
As for Taylor, the guy is 51, his FIDE rating is 2297 and he hasn't played
in a legit international tournament for as far back as I can remember. He
wants to be a GM? Well then, dagnabbit, so do I.

| I remember when my son was in about 3rd grade and played "the next
Bobby Fischer" Fabiano Caruana in a National Scholastic Tournament. He
was thrilled to get a draw when Fabiano blundered and hung a bishop.
TV cameras from NY were there to follow Fabiano to what they were sure
was going to be a National Scholastic Championship, but the
championship was not to be that year. If anyone has ever seen the
video, all you can see of my son is his bright orange hair, with a buzz
cut, from behind. It's all baseball, all the time now though with both
PONY allstars and American Legion summer ball about to start.

Sounds like me! I am also 51, and my Fide rating was about that or a bit
more, 25 years ago. These days I am proly only 900-1000ish.
What chance for us ancient patzers to become any sort of phenom? Sad, no?

Not so amazing, and these "wunderkinds" usually build their rating on a
house-of-cards repertoire that bites them in the XXX when they get to 2600
FIDE.
Computers are making it very easy to get good quickly.

Chess is all but solved by computers. The focus has shifted in a way that
makes age a lot more irrelevant than it was before.

See, this is one of the more perceptive postings I have read in a long time.
It is true.
It is also very dangerous to the player in a ratings sense, and in a
personal sense to be so stong ans so brittle.

There's no evidence it ever reached 2300 FIDE, or the 2450 he once
claimed. Perhaps he reached 2000 USCF.

Geez, my rating went up almost 400 points during that time (counting peaks

Nakamura-Adams from last year was a good example of why these teenaged GMs
may have high ratings, but stall when they get to the world championship
cycle (even Fischer had this happen when he was 15). On the other hand,
when he gets a repertoire, god help everyone else. But will he hang around
long enough to do that, or will he be yet another successful American who
attributes chess to helping him become so? He's got a lot of work to do
before he strikes fear into the Anands of the world.
My general rule in the openings is that if I wouldn't play it for the world
championship, I won't play it against even a 1200.

I once drew Robert Hess in a game where I was winning, then dropped a queen.
In time trouble we both forgot the rule about clock forfeits and incomplete
scoresheets (both of ours were missing a good dozen moves). He "claimed" a
draw (I guess to avoid losing on time, an impossibility) and I accepted, not
realizing at the time what I was doing either. With an hour or so to think
about it I might have declined. That was probably my last opportunity to
beat him.

I think its the effect of reading this newsgroup.
Look - anyone comes up to you and says, "can I ask you 3 simple questions",
then run! Allow your flight instinct to overcome the fighting one. Run into
the woods barking! Talk metaphysics to the squirrels. Stand on a rock on one
foot while reciting the alphabet backwards in Serbian-Montenegrin. Design a
building from the roof down. Dribble down your chest.
All these things are better for your rating than reading here.

Scientific data is lacking, but anecdotal evidence suggests at least
that there is a clear basis for further research. I suspect chess
newsgroups may be to intelligence what cigarets are to lungs. But I can
quit rgcm&p any time I want. Any time I want. Any time. Hell, I've quit
at least 20 times already.

Mr. Parr seems to be taking your advice. Me, I'm too old and slow to
run, even when this Cornish guy asked me *20* questions. :-)

Well, I've been reading the group less and less, and my
speed chess seems to be getting better.
So perhaps the group is not purely toxic, and at some level
doesn't do much harm. A level pretty much all of you are
exceeding.

Good point, Larry. I was using the term Title Mill in the sense
that Title Norm opportunities are mass produced. By and large, I think
that the events are hard fought. Indeed, as the major focus of players
competing in the events is to get a (higher level) FIDE Title, it is
often the case that the competitors are stronger than their rating.
However, while there have been First Saturday events where no norms
have been earned, it is usually the case that at least one player gets
a norm--sometimes two or three players earn a title norm.
Prospects are partcularly good in the GM section, as that is the
one that might have a couple of aging GMs who were included to augment
the Category of the event. By and large, I would expect that if a
marginal strength player competes in the Budapest events for a period
of about 6 months, it is more likely than not that fortune will smile
on that player, and he will have a good enough performance in one event
to get his/her norm.
There are probably events in which it is easier for a player to get
a norm, but they might only occur once a year, as opposed to 12 times a
year.

Chandra is the younger sister of Humpy Koneru. Fabiano used to live in
NY. He is a very nice boy. His family moved to Europe some months ago
to give him more opportunities to play in serious competition. G/30 at

Well, I've been reading the group less and less, and my
speed chess seems to be getting better.
So perhaps the group is not purely toxic, and at some level
doesn't do much harm. A level pretty much all of you are
exceeding.

Though, of course, two norms and a rating of >2300 (IM) or >2500 (GM) are
required for a title.
