Author What is with all these new "Deans" of chess?

A recent issue of Chess Life magazine declared that Svetozar Jovanovic
was the "Dean of American Scholastic Chess".

I had no objection to this but some others did, pointing out that
whilke Svetozar Jovanovic has long been the chess coach for the Dalton
School and has won many national championships, Sunil Weeramantry has
won more and was the coach for the new US Champion, Hikaru Nakamura.

Then, the March Chess Life declared on the cover that Arnold Denker is
the Dean of American Chess.

Again, no complaint. He certainly deserved it.

However, then the April Chess Life declared on the cover that Arthur
Bisguier is the Dean of American Chess

I have no real complaint, but what is going on here? Why have there
been three deans in three months? Who has been appointing all these
deans?

My college had lots of deans. Why should chess be any different?

Would you rather be called "dean" or "old fart" ?

I am reminded of the time that Dean Rusk became Secretary of State
under President Kennedy. He was escorted around the State Department
by a person who thought Dean was an academic title, and who therefore
addressed him as "Dean." At a later time his escort discovered he had
been first-naming Mr. Rusk.

In the case of Dean (Jonathan) Swift,
'Dean' was not an 'academic title'.

At which Oxbridge college might Don Quixote
have given lectures? :-)

The GM title has been devalued; why should it be any different for 'Dean'?

If I were offered that title I'd turn it down. It's like being Pope. All
your "great predecessors" are dead.

Is that likely to be an issue?

All that's left are their descendants. Hmmm. Not many of them
either.
