Fischer has been much maligned for his statement that he could beat
any woman in the world at knight odds. However, at the time he made
this statement he probably could have defeated the woman's world
champion at knight odds.

That all changed the same year however when Nona Gaprindashvili became
woman's world champion. Gaprindashviili was vastly better than her
predecessors. By winning the wortld championship match 9-2 she showed
that she was more than 200 points stronger than her predecessor.

Before Gaprindashvili, the best two women in the world were Bikova and
Rudenko. Both of them were only about 2200 strength. I would not have
been willing to bet any significant amount on money on either of them
to beat Fischer at knight odds. At five minute chess, Fischer would
have wiped them out at those odds. Perhaps in a four hour game, they
might have had a chance against Fischer at knight odds.

Nowadays there are hundreds of women who are better than the woman
world champions were prior to 1962.

In an appearance on the Tonight Show in 1972, shortly after winning the WC,
Fischer was entirely gracious in his assessment of Gaprindashvili's
strength, calling her "a very fine player." Nothing about knight odds; in
fact, no condescension whatsoever.
