And if Fischer never played the 1972 match with Spassky, he wouldn't
exactly have a legit claim to the title, now would he?

You seem to disregard the fact that Kramnik beat the best player on the
planet to win the title.
If Kramnik is so weak, then Topalov should simply end all debate and
play him in a match. In fact, why wouldn't Topalov want to end all
speculation as to who the "true" champion is - both under the control of
FIDE, and in succession from the line starting with Steinitz?
