| Russian Authorities Close Down Cafe to Disrupt Meeting With Liberal Kasparov

Fire safety inspectors in Russia's Siberian region of Kemerovo have closed
down the Davydov Tavern chosen as a venue for a news conference that was to
be held Tuesday by prominent liberal politician and former chess champion
Garry Kasparov.
Authorities said the tavern would be closed for five days pending a regular
examination by the local fire inspectorate, the Gazeta.Ru news website
reported.
Igor Panin, the owner of the tavern, reported that he had learned of the
decision on Tuesday morning from local journalists and Garry Kasparov. Panin
believes that by ordering the closure, the local government sought to
disrupt the meeting planned by the opposition leader.
Alexander Kosvintsev of the local branch of the Kasparov-led United Civil
Front said that finding a venue for the meeting had not been easy. The
meeting had had to be postponed several times, "due to the actions of the
authorities," he said.
The owner of the tavern explained that a day earlier the place was visited
by inspectors from the local administration, followed by the head of the
regional consumer market directorate Luisa Shishkina, who claimed the cafe
was subject to a regular check.
Tuesday saw the arrival of fire safety inspectors. "I was ordered to suspend
operations at the cafe because the entrance was fitted out with wooden
panels," Panin explained. Those panels have been in place for 20 years now
and nobody has ever complained about them before, he said.
Marina Litvinovich, a spokesperson for the United Civil Front, recalled that
it was not the first time that Kasparov had faced such problems. In May he
was not allowed to speak to students at a local technical university. The
meeting was held on the porch of the university building.

| Yeah right.
Goichberg closed down almost an entire state.
Hmmm. This seems like an old familiar pattern, doesn't it?
Never mind.

and I'm wondering :
what are the bets, that Kasparov will replace Putin in 2008 ?
has he a real chance ?

No. If he seems popular he'll end up in a gulag. Then perhaps Iceland will
grant him citizenship.

I read a report at Mosnews last week which evaluated challenges to Pres.
Putin as perceived by Russians. Gary didn't even make it on that list. He
does appear sometimes as a political personality who wishes to liberalise
politics in Russia - but the reason for the articles are that he has been
assaulted, or suffered other affront. Phil
