Thank you for the additional information Kevin although I still am not
sure what it is that I got "completely wrong."

Once upon a time (early 1980's I believe), the ICA ran a scholastic
championship that had scant attendance.

Erv Sedlock started an event that focused on scholastics.

The event thrived and the ICA decided to recognize it as the official
championship.

I do not think of Co-Chess as a unified powerful body (anymore than I
think of the ICA as a unified powerful body). Perhaps they are a
disorganized rabble. However, even a disorganized rabble can put up a
heck of a fight when a more powerful body attempts to impose its will.
Sometimes a perceived threat to an important interest can cause a
disorganized rabble to develop cohesion.
