As I understand it, the reason we have the tournament we have today is
because no one was showing up for the official championship and someone
decided to focus on making a tournament attractive to scholastics.
That tournament did so well that the ICA decided to recognize it rather
than run its own tournament.

Once upon a time, the NIT was a much more prestigious collegiate
basketball tournament than the NCAA Championship. Official is nice,
but it is not everything.
