"Chess capital of the world" ?!
|
|
| Miriling 2005-01-09, 12:45 am |
| Here's an item that seemed to have been overlooked when it appeared in the
Crossville (Tenn.) Chronicle on July 18, 2003, written by the sports editor, Ed
Greif:
Thanks to two major coups, Cumberland County strengthened its hold as the "golf
capital" of Tennessee, and will becomed [sic] the "chess capital of the world".
That, of course, is how the local paper described the USCF move to Crossville.
The sports editor added:
One of these days, "chess capital of the world," will be added to the city
water towers and along I-40.
Let's hope that the city fathers do no embarrass themselves by putting this
hyperbole on their local water towers and along the interstate highway there.

They are going to paint squares on the interstate and make the water
towers shaped like chess pieces.

Don't worry about a thang, George. Nothing will replace all those "See Rock
City" and "Martha White Flour" signs.

Actually, the high school has a chess board made into the floor in the
center of the school. You are going to be supprised how serious they
are about the game, and proud of them as well.
