I always make sure that if I want to let go of a piece without moving it, I drop it on a square it could never reach -- h1 in a
castled position for example.

Which brings up another idea, which I don't know is implementable or not, that is, once your mouse 'touches' a piece by clicking on
it, you have to move it! Touch-move!!
