Following this line of reasoning, a myriad of activities other than
posting to a chess newsgroup "could be more useful" in doing
"something to oppose racism today".

In fact, if fighting racism isn't one's bag, working for world peace,
ameliorating world hunger, or simply helping old ladies across the
street would be nobler than a preoccupation with chess politics or
even with chess itself.

It seems most of us prefer puzzles to saintliness.
