I played Peter twice in Greater NY HS/JHS tournaments between 1968 and 1972.
The first time, at the old Brooklyn chess club in winter, 1968, I tried
snatching an h-pawn a la Fischer-Spassky, Game 2, 1972. He trapped my Bishop
of course. About half an hour later Winston's buddy Matthew Looks came over
and asked how things were going. "Elementary win" is what Peter said. I
survived another 20-30 moves but of course a piece for two pawns is usually
an elementary win. At the time I believe I was rated around 950 and Winston
was in the 1300s. That scoresheet is somewhere in among several boxes of
junk at my mother's.
The next time we played I believe was at the 1971 Greater NY HS
championship. By now I was rated in the low-mid-1500s and I believe Winston
was a mid-A player (although I don't remember for sure). The round before
Winston had beaten Robert Gruchacz (who went on to become an IM) in about a
dozen moves. "Gruchacz the prick resigns" is what Winston wrote on his
scoresheet.
Next round (or maybe the one after) I was fortunate enough to be playing at
the top table, against Winston. Upon seeing I had black I asked Gruch what I
should play against him and he suggested the French. I couldn't do that so
Bob suggested the Pirc. "How does that go?" Well, I was ok after the first
3-4 moves but it was downhill after that. I lost in 10-15 moves.
Those were the days, and NY was the place to be if you were a HS chess
player. The Catholic schools had a league consisting of Xavier (my school),
St. Peter's in Jersey City, Brooklyn Prep, Regis, Fordham Prep, and a couple
of other schools. Since we was centrally located most of the matches took
place at Xavier. I got to know Gruchacz very well since I saw him once a
week. Plus we both played at the Jersey City chess club (Steve Stoyko, Meyer
Riff, Paul Helbig, et al). I must have played 300 games of blitz against
Gruchacz, Phil Newman, John DiGioia, and Robert Vitelli. Gruchacz would give
me 3-5 minute odds for a nickel a game.
Anyone reading this who played either in Bill G's NY HS tourneys, at the
catholic league, or in JC drop me a note.

Just to explain this posting:
Peter Winston is widely believed to have killed himself in about 1977
after losing all his games at a FIDE Futurity tournament organized by
Bill Goichberg.
Bruce Kopet, the poster here, was a friend of Peter Winston and
believes that he is still alive.
Bruce Kopet gave me the telephone number of the mother of Peter
Winston, so I called her about one month ago but she refused to speak
to me about it.
The body of Peter Winston was never found, so it is possible that he
is still alive.
