Reeve was slated as the keynote speaker for a pharmaceutical industry
conference I helped organize for Spring 2005. Now we have to try to get Sam
Sloan.
It's unclear whether his infection was life-threatening before he entered
the hospital, or if he got hit by one of those hospital-acquired super-bugs
that kills 100,000+ Americans every year. In any event it's kind of sad
after all he's been through.
Too bad C.R. couldn't wait for Kerry to be elected. According to Drudge,
running mate John Edwards promised on Monday that if his ticket wins,
diseases will be cured and people will walk out of wheelchairs. He
specifically mentioned Reeve. Aside from the quasi-messianic absurdity of
Edwards' statement, using Reeve's tragedy to promote his politics of
emptiness is nothing more than a cheap lawyerly rhetorical trick. The kind
that works with stupid jurors and voters.
