Author 3-handed Chinese Chess?

I recently read the article by David Li on Chessbase where he describes
various aspects of Chinese Chess, and in particular how he believes that the
recent surge of Chinese strength in Western chess is due in part to these
players growing up with Xiangqi. As I'm falling more and more in love with
Xiangqi, I can only agree! :o)

However, thats not my point. One of the pictures in the article was of a
3-handed CC board. It looks like a really interesting variant. Are there
other variants of Xiangqi? Is there anywhere I can play the 3-handed
version?

Thanks,
Alain Dekker

This is understandable. Once you are exposed to Xiangqi, a western
chess player cannot help being impressed by Xiangqi's charms.

In one of my earlier posts a day or so ago (after Part II of my
interview appeared), in response to a post by Keith, I mentioned a
triangular version and a heptagonal (7-handed) version (diagrams of both
are in my Genealogy of Chess book). Though you will be at the WXC9
Paris as shall I, the intensity of the event, in all likelihood, would
prevent playing the game there. Perhaps you can arrange with your team
captain, CK Lai, a top player generous with his time, to arrange one
after the WXC9? Good luck in Paris.

I may have some files that would allow you to print out a board, but I
would have to rummage through my archives. About 5 or 6 years ago I
made a board using the DrawingBoard Lite program, and it was quite
easy. (Visio failed miserably.) The only problem is that you would need
access to a large format plotter/printer in order to be able to print
out a reasonably sized board. You could probably take them into a
Kinkos and get them printed and even laminated. This would just address
the playing board, and for the pieces I guess that you could cut up
some dowel and draw the additional pieces.

If you are interested please post and I will look for them.

Here is a link to a pdf for what it's worth:

This can probably be scaled to just about any size.

Looks my google groups tries to protect the email address embedded in
the link. So in case you can't read it try removing the spaces below:
