Positional and endgame skills are necessary, I agree, but
a player can go quite far with very little knowledge of
openings. I was rated over 2100 USCF when I was an active
player and was beyond my book knowledge by move eight in
most games. Earlier, sometimes.
I was fairly good at endgames, though, and not terrible
at positional play. Probably worse at tactics than most
2000 rated players.
Judging by my wins and losses (i.e. how many games I lost due
to a bad opening vs those I lost tactically) a detailed knowledge
of the opening might have gained me 50 to 100 rating points.
Significantly improved tactical skill would have gained me
perhaps 200. Most of my losses came in inferior but possibly
defensible positions in which I was simply out-analyzed or
failed to see a tactical resource.
