Author restoring games on Win.98 w/out CD

Hi,
I accidentally removed the games component on a friends computer by
going into the add/remove programs and clicking on games. There was a problem
with one of the games and I thought I could remove and then reinstall the
games component. Much to my dismay, when I tried to reinstall it said I
needed to insert a Win/98 disc. Neither of us has one, and Microsoft doesn't
distribute Win/98 discs anymore (too old). Is there anyway to get them back
without a disc???????. I'm in hot water.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do a search for win*.cab and if found, those are the Windows cabinet
files. Look at what folder they're in and direct the prompt for the
Windows CD to that folder.

Elmo,
Could you be a little more specific? I attempted to follow you
directions on my own computer so that I could help my friend follow your
instructions and I had at least 3 choices and was not sure how to proceed. I
am moderately computer literate , but in this case I need step by step
instructions. If you have time, could you do that? I would greatly appreciate
it.
Thanks. Ripley

Where were you given 3 choices, at the Find/Search prompt or when asked
to enter the CD?

- Click Start, Find, Files or Folders.
- In the "Named:" pane type "win*.cab" (no quotes).
- Click "Find Now".
- After the search, see what folder contains these files; it's probably
named C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or C:\Win98.

When prompted for the CD:

- You might first have to click OK so the next prompt is shown.
- One pane will ask where to get the files; I don't remember the exact
prompt, but it will show "D:" or "D:\Win98" in the pane.
- Click on the arrow to the right of the pane and scroll up and down for
the folder that contains the .cab files. If it isn't listed, you click
on any of the entries, delete, or type over it till you've changed it to
read the correct path.
- Click OK or Next or whatever is offered. Don't click "Skip File"
though this can come in handy if you know the needed files are already
installed properly and registered on the HD.

His .cab files could be in a different folder, or nonexistent if his OEM
supplied a CD and didn't store them on the HD.

Some Compaq and HP restore CD's will wipe (reformat) the HD when used to
repair an install, so be careful before resorting to one of them; ie.,
make sure you back up any needed data before agreeing to let the CD
clean reformat drive.
