According to the microsoft website and documentation FS 2004 comes with the
GMAX tool as well. I however cannot find any gmax executable in my FS2004
installation and the only GMAX I see in the SDK's website is just
documentation about the tool but no executable.

Have I been ripped off or what?

BTW I am also looking for a tool with which I can repaint an aircraft, would
that be GMAX or something else? is it free? ;-)

after a little research using my favorite browser, i found this:

http://www.microsoft.com/games/flig...wnloads_sdk.asp

after reading website i found this :

WARNING:
Before downloading the gmax Gamepack SDK, make sure you have already
installed gmax (included with Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight on
disc 1 in \extras\Gmax). For help with gmax, visit the official support Web
site at http://www.gmaxsupport.com/.

after checking disc 1 i found this:

Gmax\extras 47.7 MB (50,108,928 bytes)

i have it on my cd. if you don't understand directories, perhaps you should
ask, then we can help.

hmmm, doing a simple search i found this on my favorite browser:

http://www.microsoft.com/games/flig...wnloads_sdk.asp

from that page after scrolling down i found this:

WARNING:

installed gmax (included with Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight on
disc 1 in \extras\Gmax). For help with gmax, visit the official support Web

(included with Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight on disc 1 in
\extras\Gmax). i on my fsp #1 cd i found this:
47.7 MB (50,108,928 bytes) with an executable.

if your not sure how to follow directories , ask.
no you didn't get ripped off , but you do need to learn to research.

goodluck !

Hei thanks!
I don't know how I missed this, one of the few times I did not bother to
look into the CDs after the installation. I found the GMAX in the place you
mentioned.

Unfortunately the so called gmaxsupport.com website has been taken over by
some RunEscape money cheat and the only GMAX thing there is the word in the
website, nothing else.

Luckily I found a place which describes the steps you must follow in order
to get a registration code:

http://www.turbosquid.com/RegisterGmax/Index.cfm

did that, got the reg code from discreet and it appears to be running. But
GMAx does not directly import FS2004 textures so there seem to be something
else, I think the GamePack SDK only allows GMAX->FS2004.

I have not found any FS2004 repaint tutorial yet, and some of the .bmp
aircraft textures seem to have some secret compression because not even
Paint in WinXP Pro SP2 can open those files (tried gimp 2.2 as well).

But for those interested I did find a site with "repaint kits" to start
from:

http://www.simviation.com/fs_paintkits3.htm

Then again same problem there, the .bmp files are not recognized by MS Paint
or any program capable of handling .BMP format.

So, does anybody has a useful link to a FS2004 repaint tutorial?

To complicate things GMAX has been kind of killed by AutoDesk so I guess now
one cannot get a registration key

Just an F.Y.I for anyone still looking for Gmax and thinknig about repainting
aircraft is FS2004...

- Gmax is no longer supported by Discreet/AutoDesk (as of Oct 2005)
- Registration may no longr work.
- Gmax does not allow you to repaint aircraft.

For repaints there is a very handy program called "BMP2000" and another
called "DXTbmp". Both of these will convert the special FS2004 bmp files to
be editable in Paint/Paintshop Pro/Photoshop/whatever. You can also edit the
alpha channel (the special extra in the files that controls lighting on the
textures).
You convert the texture files from the bmp-with-alpha format, edit them,
then convert them back to bmp-with-alpha format.

A great site for all things FlightSim is www.flightsim.com - I've used it
for years and found hundreds of add-ons, not to mention utilities, tools and
many, many helpful people who enjoy flightsims as well as helping any
beginners to find their way.
