Author FS2004 behaving weird on mapping of axis

OK, now something is wrong with my FS. For some reason it lost my joystick
mappings so I had to redo it (I found myself in mid air with no control of
the plane).

Since I had done the mapping before I knew how to do it. Went to the Axis
tab and assigned the X (aileron), Y (elevator) and Z (rudder) axes. Then
went to the other tab where you assign a button to a particular function.

Weird thing is, when I now try to assign the joystick X/Y/Z buttons to the
Aileron/Elevator/Rudder commands it does not "detect" them so it does not
"assign" it. The resulting map shows those functions as keyboard only
whereas before I had there also the joystick mappings.

What is even weirder is that in spite of not letting me to assign them
(normal buttons can still be assigned function, just not the progressive
ones) the controls are still properly mapped (how I don't know, it seems to
remember, maybe selective amnesia). BTW, the Windows & FS2004 properties for
the joystick device indicates it works correctly (there is a Test tab in the
property page). So, somehow FS can't get it for its setup page but it does
receive the events as otherwise I would not be able to fly.

I hope FS X comes with some airport design facilities. There is a nice
airport in my country that is not even marked in FS2004. I like it because
it is a small island and the runway runs from one end of the island (narrow
stretch) to the other and if you overshoot you and your plane have an
uncomfortable 15 meter drop into a beach. For those interested and Google
Earth fanatics here is the placemark:

I tried to add it as user addon with a program called AFCAD but when i
placed it in that directory FS failed to start with some error about the
directory being in use (could not create something.dat I think).

Windows sometimes ignores a control that has intermittent electrical
contacts in a potentiometer. In the Windows calibration pop-up watch
carefully to see if any of the indicators jump around despite holding
the joystick stationary. It doesn't always work, but sometimes this
problem can be resolved a while by opening the joystick's base and
spraying electrical contact cleaner into the potentiometers. There are
obvious risks of not being able to reassemble the controller properly
after this procedure though.

Just in case - When making assignments make sure the proper controller
is selected in the list box near the top of the window. I've had trouble
with that a time or two.

For scenery (including airport) design information check the Microsoft
site http://www.microsoft.com/games/flig...r/downloads.asp for
Flight Simulator SDKs (Software Developer Kits) and/or forums and file
libraries on http://www.avsim.com/

CTRL-E or the Email View option on the file menu. Automatically
generates an email with a 453 byte Google_Earth_Placemark.kmz file
attached to it. Compatible with mail clients and apparently Gmail
accounts, but I doubt with most web clients. I just tested it. Opening
the attachment started the Google Earth client in a wide angle view then
panned and zoomed to the "sent" overview of the default FS 2004 start
position at Sea-Tac (I just HAD to include some FS 2004 relevance!)

Message's text content:

"You have been sent a Google Earth Placemark(tm).

If you have Google Earth installed, you can double-click on the attached
Placemark file and it will fly you to a location. If not, you will need
to install Google Earth first (available at http://earth.google.com).

Google Earth streams the world over wired and wireless networks enabling
users to virtually go anywhere on the planet and see places in
photographic detail. This is not like any map you have ever seen. This
is a 3D model of the real world, based on real satellite images combined
with maps, guides to restaurants, hotels, entertainment, businesses and
more. You can zoom from space to street level instantly and then pan or
jump from place to place, city to city, even country to country.

Get Google Earth. Put the world in perspective.
