FS2004 stopped working!
|
|
|
| System:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
512MD DDR RAM
160GB Hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce FX5500
Before Christmas I was running FS2004 on this machine. Santa brought me a
new joystick but, because of the grandchildren needing to be amused, I've
only just got round to trying it out.
Booted machine into WXP (Home) as usual for running FS2004 and to try out
the new stick but there is a problem!
The graphics don't show up unless I reduce hardware support, and then only
very jerkily!
Nothing has changed, other than the computer being off for several days.
Similar problem with MS Train Simulator, when it boots, and with Sims2
Checked drivers and DivX9c is there, along with latest NVIDIA drivers.
Please, any ideas?

Run dxdiag.exe and go through all the tests, does it show any problem?

| Hi, Katy!
Ran dxdiag as suggested. Everything reported to be working ok, according
to that. Except, there is no graphic on the side of the bouncing box!
Ran through the help files, but nothing poked me in the eye!

Pops - you don't say if the joystick is connected. If you remove it, does
the problem continue? Is it an USB stick or connects to a game port? I'd
uninstall the stick, removing all drivers, and then try again.
Good luck!

If the display is not complete you should re-install or update the
video drivers: www.nvidia.com

| Hi, Vic.
Nope, didn't get round to installing it. I was booting up to un-install
the old one when the problem arose.

OK, then run FS via its "reset defaults" shortcut in the
troubleshooting folder (Start menu, All programs...) Does it help?

| If all else fails, how about the old delete FS9.cfg file and restart to
rebuild trick ?
Directory for file is :
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9 using XP
delete the FS9.exe file and re-start FS9
then you will have to go through settings again to set to your satisfaction.

| Thanks.
Tried that but no joy. In fact there was no rebuild, either.
Result was boot into minimal resolution mode with normal splash screen,
then normal "select screen" Tried the Meigs as a default but got the same
black screen with a "double piano keyboard" or "devils grin" box and
nothing else.
Come the weekend and I'm going to reinstall the OS from scratch and rebuild
unless there is a breakthrough beforehand. Life is short!
cheers,
Pops

| crap pops,
hmmm, that is a puzzler.
did our favorite grandchildren come over during the holidays and surf the
web like a bunch of ho-daddys at the pipeline?
maybe run your virus-scan to see what it comes up with.
i know a complete re-install is a 2-3 project to get things loaded, but may
be last resort BUT WAIT !!
un-install fs2004 first, here is link for instructions:
you must first un-install update fs9v.1
http://www.microsoft.com/games/flig...9.1_english.asp
then go to your fs9 folder and find the fs9 uninstall.exe
pain i know, i just did it a few days ago.
goodluck and keep us posted please !

| One other thing to check, if you already haven't. Remove and reseat the
video card in it's slot. I don 't recall if that model has a fan but be sure
it's working. If you have another vid card, you might swap to eliminate it
as the cause.
Good luck!
