Author Age of Empires II with Windows XP

I recently upgraded to Windows XP and now get a message advising that the
program was designed for an earlier version of Windows.
Is there a patch or workaround that I can use to run this program?
MS support gave a "sorry, but..." reply

AOE II works well with Windows XP.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling AOE II.
