I just have two quick questions concerning Flight Simulator 2006. First,
approximately when is it due to be released? Second, am I going to need a
supercomputer to run it?

When Microsoft is ready for you to know these facts you will barely be
able to avoid the news. The next version might not be called Flight
Simulator 2006 either. If Microsoft is patient enough it might end up
being called Flight Simulator 2007 or Flight Simulator 2008. The
development team probably doesn't even have a final feature or minimum
system requirement list for the next version yet.

I beg to differ, the development team would have known BEFORE FS 2004 went
gold if they would be working on a "next" version. If the funding is there,
then they would have already started in on the specs/feature set of what is
going to be in the next verison of FS. It is not cost effective to put
developers on other projects and then bring them back to FS -- it is always
a better to keep the core team intact and on a constant flow. Having the
developers go do other projects then return would require some time getting
back up to speed on the code, the project, etc. etc.

Microsoft have been pretty consistant with releases of FS and since it is a
money making project, it would be pretty safe to assume FS 2006 will be out
next year (or even Xmas this year). Based on the past, I would expect FS
2006 to be more of a fine tuned improvement, rather than a major change. MS
seem to be on a 4 year cycle for what I would consider "major" FS version
and a 2 year cycle for minor FS version.

There is no reason to think FS 2006 would be any different in terms of
hardware requirements -- usually 1-2 years ahead of the current best tech of
the day (at release time) -- I think it will be less demanding than the
change from FS 2002 to 2004 was. But there again, I never understood why
people think adding more realism is somehow NOT going to require more
hardware.

Flight Simulator is already finished and in the debugging stages, so I've
heard. May friend (though I'm really not supposed to tell you) has the
preliminary version of FS2006 since his dad has something to do with it's
development and he got to test it. and yes, you probably will need a
supercomputer to run it.

Nothing is finished until the fat lady sings.

If the code contains debug info then it will run much slower, once they
produce a real "beta" then they will compile without debug info. So if what
you claim is true, they haven't even reached an "Alpha" yet so there is
still a good year or more left of development work until it hits the
public -- that's assuming the specs don't change -- i.e. the project manager
decides the code MUST support multiple CPUs (hint hint).

As far as the supercomputer requirements -- that isn't new news, because the
current FS2004 has the same requirements.
