Have just migrated from W98 to XP Home and found my MS Sidewinder Precision
Pro(USB) is recognised by XP and the control column works as does the
throttle control and brakes button. The software which came with it was for
W98 and is v 3.02.

Tried to install the software but window came up saying it was incompatible
with XP. It does not seem to affect the response input from Sidewinder
stick and throttle, but I cannot remember what the buttons on the sick are
for (no response from their activation) - the same applies to the up arrow
button just below the throttle control or A,B,C,& D buttons which do not
seem to work anything!

The Microsoft support pages are not helpful in response to searches for
information and indicates that if 3.x is installed all should be OK. I
should be very grateful for help please - or reminders. Many thanks.

As Microsoft intended. As many Windows 9x/ME drivers are incompatable
with Windows NT and XP, Microsoft had to include drivers in Windows XP
to permit customers using the upgrade versions of Windows XP to continue
using their controllers. The remainder of the software would not be
present if the customer performed a clean operating system install
(including full and OEM Windows XP package installations)

As the Sidewinder product line has been discontinued, development of a
XP compatable version of the assignment and profile software is
unlikely. As the controller's software may include provisions to emulate
keyboard operation when a controler button is operated, those functions
may not be available in Windows XP. This incompatablity MAY be a factor
of the Sidewinder installation software refuseing to work with Windows
XP, but COULD be the result of the Windows XP driver lacking the
keyboard emulation functions. As Windows NT was aimed at business users,
Microsoft didn't include Windows NT support in the Sidewinder controller
software. The Sidewinder installation software would think Windows XP is
a new version of Windows NT.

The control panel's game controller popup is exclusively for controller
installation, calibration and testing and is not intended for either
axis or button assignment. The control panel popup is accessed by a
calibration command in some applications. controller specific elements
of that popup are normally installed as part of the device driver.

Button and axis assignments are typically a function of the application
(game or simulation). With some applications (like Microsoft Flight
Simulator) you may need to select your controller among a list in a
dropdown and click the joystick assignment column on the line
corresponding to the function you want to use with the button.
