Is it possible to make a movie of the whole screen or a part of it?

I have tried broadcast for a short time, but were unable to record
anything from X. Anyway, I really need a command-line based tool for this,
but have not been able to find anything like that on freshmeat or any
other place I have looked. Does such a tool even exist?

okay... I didn't try that much since it was gui-based, and I needed a
command-line based tool.
Is it possible to use broadcast without the gui?
Either way: can you give me a short how-to on how you did this?
