Author When to push back

Hello All,

Allthough I've done this now uncountable times, pressing shift-p followed by
a 1 or a 2, I suddenly wondered, what is the right moment in time during
startup checks to do a pushback?
So, after the flightplan is filed and read back, you're ready to request
taxi to the active or IFR. How is the sequence IRL. Are you already pushed
back before taxi confirmation. Can your engines be running already. Is there
a strict sequence or is it airport dependent, etc. etc.

Greetings from cloudy Amsterdam,

Jan

For major airports in the US, you contact 'Clearance Delivery' prior to push
and start. When you are ready, call ground for 'P+S' and get 'tail
direction'. Then call again when ready to taxi. I never call for a push
until all pre-flight and ground checklists are complete, and radios and AP
set for departure.

Can't say about RL. All of the prop-driven AI craft that taxi around
my parking spot don't start their engines until pushback is finished.
I always assumed this was to avoid giving the ground crew uncontracted
haircuts.

So to recap, after getting clearance delivery and having done all pre engine
checks, one calls ground for push back tail direction and after that,
permission to start the engines (not available in FS ATC). Then, after doing
the engine checks and runups, if applicable, one requests taxi clearance...

Does this fit the bill, so to speak...;-))

Hi,
in Frankfurt (EDDF) it goes like this:
1) after all the checks in the cockpit, initial programming of fmc with
planned route, pilots contact delivery (121,90) - they give you clearance
and 'sid' name, for example "klm 234, you're cleared to amsterdam via bibos
5d departure, fly planned route, sqawk 2340, contact apron on 121,70 when
ready)"
2) after about 5-15min delay (final fmc programing and cockpit preparation)
pilots contact apron and get clearance for push back and engines start (red
beacon lights - on)
3) engines' start is usually performed during pushback (sometimes pilots get
clearance to start engines at the gate).
4) pilots announce "ready to taxi" and get their directions to the active
runway. at some point they are asked to change frequency to tower.
5) "klm 234, wind xx/xx knots, cleared for take-off, runway xx". after
take-off pilots contact with frankfurt departure (120,15 or 120,80) without
being asked from the tower.

cheers,
gregory

Yup, except that normally 'push and start' is part of the same clearance.
