Could this become part of FS11? FS12?

| Hi Gang
MS has bought an earth imaging company.
Could we see future versions of FS connected to a server full of earth
images? :-)

Oof. Looks surprisingly like a photoreal texture with autogen turned all
the way up to "Meh". But something simply must be done to that sky
texture. :P
One can only hope that MS realizes that the resources (both terrain mesh
and satellite imagery) are available to make a stunning earth, and that
256x256 pictures of some cow pasture in Idaho stretched over 12 square
miles makes for some pretty blaise default scenery.
Then again, maybe MS and the addon companies are in bed, to suck more
money out of the FS addicts...

I think the new earth data can be used to better create an FS world of
land class and terrain textures. A lot more can be done with land
class, IMHO.

The ACES guys have hinted that landclass tiles will be 1024x1024 in FSX.

Another interesting discussion. One of the drawbacks of a
CPU-challenged system is the need to uncheck `Terrain Texture Details.´
Earlier this afternoon I re-checked the TTD box and the runway/field
details increased tremendously. The problem is when rolling or climbing
out. The framerate takes an untolerable hit!!
The point is, in both fs8 and fs9 the terrain textures are 256x256.
Apparently when unchecking TTD, the 1st MIP of texture is used and the
full-size bitmap is discarded. That means a user could perhaps reduce
and sharpen each terrain bmp to 128x128? and then check TTD box? Then
the overall load would be less since total file size is much smaller?
On the other side of the coin.. 512x512 or even 1024x1024 textures
would make for wonderful ground details.. but it'll take CPU and
graphics card memory to render.
So the observation here is.. using 256x256 terrain textures with TTD
unchecked. That seems to discard the FULL bitmap and drop back to the
1st MIP. An experiment could be done by a graphics/terrain savvy person
in scaling/enhancing some ground textures to 512x or 1024x and running
a test for viewing range and framerate reduction. ALso while varying
the `detail/band radius´ settings in CFG.
