In all sincerity,
Those are some of the best "amateur" shots I've ever seen of the AF Museum.
Most folks fire up the flash and get little circles of light in a huge void
of black but you've managed to get some terrifically balanced images.
Really well done!!

I'm very pleased to see that they went to the trouble to have the original
paint schemes. There's an air museum in town that has spray painted all
their beautiful warbirds with gloss paint to make them more "Disneyland" for
the flatlanders.

How did you shoot them?
How did you deal with the low light... Tripod?
And the tungston lighting?
I guess your Olmpus has a tungston mode?

| Yeah, I have Shoo Shoo in my virtual hanger. It was kind of bizarre to see
the actual plane!

| Thanks. Yup, flash can properly expose the main subject but will cause the
camera to underexpose (and blow off) the surrounding details. One thing
about digitals is that they seem to be able to handle low light situations
without flash very well! My Olympus is an ancient (4 year old...that's old
in digital!) camera but always did a great job do I keep it.

| Oh you are right about that "Disney" issue. It actually looked like many
were not even repainted but cleaned up well. It does make for a much more
honest representation and real feel to the planes.

| My little Olympus C2000Z..at least 4 years old and only a 2.1 megapixel
camera did it!
The camera always performed great in low light. The technique is simply and
needs no tripod. Turn off the flask. Have the camera strap around your
neck. Have the real time display "on". Pull the camera away from you until
the strap is tight. This actually eliminates lots of shake and can allow
for sharp exposures down to about 1/5th second. Aim, hold breath and
squeeze off the shot. Sounds like what a sniper would do, eh?

| The Oly has an "automatic white balance" mode along with tungsten and
daylight and fluorescent modes. Very seldom do you need to make any
adjustment if you leave it in auto white.
Oh, my memory does NOT serve me well. I have had the old camera for SIX
years! A description of the little guy:

Very nice pics!
I mainly lurk in the NG, but the KH and WPAFB threads brought me out of the
shadows as I've been to KH a couple times and grew up relatively close to
WPAFB. Been to the museum many times, going back to field trips in
elementary school.
Anyone who reads this NG and is relatively close to WPAFB should head over
to check it out. The museum is simply a smorgasbord of aircraft (and
spacecraft). There is something there for everyone. My leaning is mainly
towards the WW2 aircraft, especially German.
Not to mention that admission is free. (Well, your tax dollars paid for
it.)
Did you watch any of the Imax films? I always enjoyed the "Dream of Flight"
and the space-related films.
For those that that live few hours or more out and thinking about checking
out the museum: if you want to make a weekend thing out of it, you could
take the museum in during the air show. The air show usually takes place
the third weekend of July each summer. The air show takes place at Dayton
International Airport, not WPAFB, but AF services personel run shuttles
between WPAFB/DAY all weekend long -- so you won't have to drive over, find
a parking space, drive back, find a new parking space, etc. The air show is
really cool, not only is one of the main demonstration teams always
guaranteed to be at the event (many summers, we even get both the
Thunderbirds and Blue Angels), but the members of the Confederate Air Force
participate with tons of their historic planes as well. I always liked the
British Lancaster, as the guys that own that plane go full out (dressing and
playing the part). Its been a few years since I've attended, but want to
make it to the show this summer. Always had a good time there. Back in the
90's, I even participated in the Dayton airshow twice; jumping (parachuting)
in...

Fantastic pics, Mike!
Oh wow! And that place looks really big too.
Call me crazy, but the B-29 looks smaller that I thought it would be.
It look almost the same size as a Constellation.
And speaking of the Conny....what's that hump on her back?
Is that lady supposed to be some kind of pre-AWACS machine?

| Thanks Marcel. The place is huge. I actually did not see it all. There is
an exhibit of presidential planes I missed.
You know, I felt the same way about the B-29. It seemed smaller than I
imagined it to be. Yeah, that Connie is an AWACS plane.

My first commercial flight was on a TWA Connie from Omaha, Nebraska, to San
Diego, Kallifornia back in 1959 on my way to Navy boot camp..
Geeezzzzzzzz............ Here I was goin to sunny Kallifornia, but it was
the foggy/rainy season in November, and don't think we saw the sun again
until 1960!!!
Hey Mike, you think your camera is a dinosaur - mine is a Kodak DC-260,
circa 1999, 1 megapixel (that I've NEVER used at full resolution, and get
GREAT shots {not poster sized :}, at medium). Good quality glass lenses and
things like that make ALL the difference!!! IMHO, which I respect.....
Damn, you could buy two or three nice ones now for the same price.

| Mad Mike 2006-03-16, 7:34 pm |
| We like hanging on to the older stuff, Don. Parlty due to functionality.
The thing is, we own cameras that sound like old aircraft! "OLY C2000Z"
could be a little runabout biplane and the "DC-260"....well.. that has to be
similar to the DC-3, huh?

I never knew there were enough of them for an exhibit, so after reading
this I had a closer look at the Museum's website.
I'm baffled by the number of planes used by the former presidents.
It's almost like every president had his own custom plane.
I thought Smilin' Jim would have had a big row of teeth painted on the nose
of that 707. :-)
