Author Help, please!
Mike Turland

Hi,

A retired, ex. RAF friend who has Microsoft flight simulator installed on
his computer, has gone on a 'round the world' trip starting and ending at
London's Heathrow putting the stills of various worldly locations onto a DVD
disk. His added commentary and background music has given the flight more
appeal. However, he now intends a re-run, this time making his journey into
a movie. His problem is how to do it. Any help and advice would be most
appreciated.
Thank you, in advance.

Does he want to record the ENTIRE TRIP or selected portions of it? Hint:
recording the entire trip will require TERABYTES of storage

Not the ENTIRE TRIP Mike, only selected interesting portions. Perhaps he
should
just do a trip around the UK coastline instead.

Well actually, you could do snippets of the entire trip.

You first need a video capture application. Lots of folks have had good
luck with fraps. It is a shareware application. Othere may want to chime
in and suggest other video capture applications. There are several.

http://www.fraps.com/

Go ahead and start flying. Every once in a while you will want to pause and
take the option to Instant re-play. You can go back quite a few seconds and
replay your current flight over and over. You can, during the replay switch
views, I.E. Virtual Cockpit to Spot View and so on. During this time make
mental notes as to what you want to record and from what views.

Fire up Fraps, reduce the FS window to something smaller than a full screen
(full sized scene captures are a major drag on your system), get into FS
again, Instant re-play the portions of your flight you want and have Fraps
in its capture mode.

Basically you then will want to save those video captures in some folder and
build up a bunch of video clips.

From there, at some point you will want to use a video editor to edit those
saved clips, cut, combine them, add music and/or comments and output the
final video to the source you want. There are a number reasonably priced
VERY powerful video editors. I'm not pushing this one but it has MANY bells
and whistles for about 100 bucks. It is Adobe Premiere Elements, a low
priced version of their professional Adobe Premiere.

http://www.adobe.co.uk/products/premiereel/main.html

Many video editors have an option to create a DVD including a nice thumbnail
menu of options that allow you to jump to scenes directly. You can create a
slick title page and such. Just like the movies you rent!

That is an overview. I'm sure you have other questions

Hey Mike, I see alot of Icons you don't use on a regular basis on your
desktop. what I did was creat a new folder and titled it unused desktop and
then drag all those icons into it. It will clear out alot of what you don't
rightly use at the time, and you got your panel in the clear so you can see
the instruments and such.

also if you want to snap any pics of the flights you take
http://www.gadwin.com and download the gadwin 2.8 or the latest thing they
got, it free download.
when you see a pic you want on your screen just hit print and it will go to
your pics file

Or, alternatively, you could drag them ALL into your task bar and then
pop them up when required. A neat trick I learnt some time ago and
again one I will never forget.

Nice cluttered desktop Mike!!
Just to add to capturing I see you are using Camtasia which I believe has an
option for capturing a selectable window, I think FRAPS only captures the
full screen. I have tried capturing with it and having FS reduced in size
but the resulting video has a huge black margin around where the desktop
shows. I tried a demo of camtasia and I got lower fps whilst recording

I like the disorganization, Ibby

Yup, you can specify a precise area to capture on the screen...real handy.

fraps can also capture in half screen. but i got fastcappro to capture
game. i have electable FS (from 400 x 300, ..., 800 x 600 or the full
screen) in fastcap and the fps will not drop during my recording.
fastcappro especially works great in opengl games.

fraps also has half screen
