GE Screen shots here...
|
|
|
| Since the file size here doesnt allow good resolution on screen shots,
I posted a bunch on my site. If anyone wants to see what GE looks like
in various locations, there are around 60 up now.

PPS is posting through SimRadar's phpBBS interface (the web-based forum
software used by many websites these days). SimRadar started mirroring
this USENET newsgroup on their website a couple of years ago.
The issue is that most of SimRadar's members have no idea that the source
of this group is NOT SimRadar, but rather Usenet. Consequently (and not
really at the fault of the members), you get many members posting images
and failing to quote posts because they see them all linearly and the posts
there never expire. Since most news servers recognize that this group is a
text-only group, the servers automatically strip off the binary attachment
(image).
If you are so inclined to understand, take a look at their forum of this
newsgroup to see what I mean.
At one point, we were getting a lot of troll-type activity from SimRadar
and I was actually considering creating a filter to block all SimRadar
posts from my newsreader since SimRadar seemed more of a nuisance, but then
I would have missed the excellent contributions of Mr. David W-O (another
SimRadar member who, by the way, seems to understand the issues and tries
to include quotes in all of his replies).

Dude, as you no doubt know by now, this newsgroup originates in
Usenet-land, not SimRadar.
One of two issues are at play here: Either the Usenet news servers,
recognizing that this newsgroup is a text-only group, strip off your binary
attachment that is your image or SimRadar strips it off before sending your
post up to its news server.

Sorry, since I could see it I assumed everyone could. I had no idea
this originates in usenet. It is just a link to a site I post pics to,
which I have been able to do in any usenet group. Thanks for the heads
up.

My apologies, I don't mean to come across as cranky. How would you know
about this relationship that SimRadar has with Usenet, right?
A few of us predicted there were going to be problems like this when
SimRadar first started mirroring this group. Back then, SimRadar would
send an email every time we received a reply to our posts, despite the fact
that we did not post our messages through their interface. Those were
some fun times.

| I would love to go to usenet for this, I don't like forums, never have,
never will, I find them too time consuming and tedious to wade through.
Thanks for the insight, could you tell me how to find these on usenet?

I strongly agree. The news reader format for interacting with newsgroups
is MUCH more intuitive than the web-based BBS format.
Who is your ISP provider? Most all of them (with the exception of AOL)
offer newsgroup access through their own news servers. You need to find
out from them the name of their news servers.
Verizon DSL and FiOS broadband, for example, offer Usenet through
news.verizon.net, Road Runner broadband offered it through local servers,
such as news-server.twcny.rr.com (twcny being the locality) and so on.
These two providers required your userid (your email address without the
@ISP.com) and your email password to access the servers.
However, there are also some good, free text-only news providers about
which I have read. You can search Google for "free news providers" for a
list.
Get yourself a good, free newsreader, such as Mozilla Thunderbird (which
looks like Outlook Express but is much more feature-rich), or an even more
feature-rich news reader called 40tude Dialog. Dialog is what I use
currently for text newsgroups. The links are here:
http://www.getthunderbird.com
http://www.40tude.com/dialog/
After you install it, configure it to access your local news provider, you
need to get the list of available newsgroups from the server. This is a
simple menu option off both newsreaders I discussed above. After you
retrieve the list, subscribe to "alt.games.microsoft.flight-sim" (without
the quotes) and you are good to go.
Hey, David W-O, don't suppose you would be interested in crossing over to
the dark side with us, would you?

There is something to be said for the simplicity of a textual, hierarchical
format.
