Question about cfg. file I think :-)
|
|
| Dudley Henriques 2006-02-27, 7:37 pm |
| I just did a complete uninstall/reinstall of FS9 as a general cleaning out
and cleaned out saved files. I notice that when the sim reinstalled, all the
controller button selects were intact and as before. I'm puzzled by this.
My controllers are CH and I use the simulator controller settings in the sim
to assign the buttons and switches which I assume is a straight direct x
function. I do use the CH software to calibrate the controllers, but no
button assignments there.
What's puzzling to me is that I've always thought my controller settings are
stored in the FS9 cfg file. In fact, I keep a spare cfg file with the
settings assigned just in case I screw something up and need a new cfg file.
I've always thought that if I didn't have this file saved with the
controller settings in it, any new cfg file created would require me
resetting up the controller assignments.
What's puzzling this time is that after uninstalling the sim and cleaning
out everything, when the sim reinstalled, all the controller settings were
intact and as before.
Can anyone shed some light on how I reinstalled with the previous controller
settings intact?
Thanks much
Dudley

Did you manually delete the cfg file before the reinstall?. Maybe the
reinstall saw the cfg file and did not overwrite it or even bother to ask.

Hi Bill;
No. I didn't touch the cfg file at all during the uninstall/reinstall
process. When the sim uninstalled, it did so with the cfg file working with
the controller settings as assigned in the sim.
When the sim reinstalled, it reinstalled with whatever defines a clean cfg
file and has remained untouched since.
What I'm trying to discover is how the sim reinstalled from scratch knowing
the prior settings for the controller.
The only thing I can imagine is that those settings are stored by direct X
and somehow reassigned to the FS9 cfg file as the sim reinstalls??????
Anyway, it's a puzzlement so far :-))))))

I just realized what you were asking me here :-)
Are you saying that the cfg file for the sim isn't included in the uninstall
process because of it's location outside the FS9 root folder?? If this is
true, that would answer the question completely because I did NOT manually
delete that file thinking it was part of the uninstall process.
if the reinstall reads an existing cfg file as it installs and dosen't
overwrite that file, that's the answer right there I think??????????

Yes that is my thinking. Usually uninstalls do not touch user files.

| Usually an uninstall will NOT touch any files that are modified. Your cfg
file gets modified by the setting changes you make so uninstall will leave
it alone.

| I'm just guessing here, but it would make sense that MS put the cfg file
outside the main FS9 root folder for just this reason; so that if you had to
uninstall the program, when you reinstalled it you wouldn't lose all your
settings. Am I close on this, or am I missing the mark?

| No <G>. The install keeps track of where all the files are installed no
matter how many directories are used. When you uninstall the program knows
what has changed and normally leaves changed files/directories alone on the
assumption you might want to keep those changes (unless someone did
something wierd when they wrote the install <G> ). The reason for the
fs9.cfg for being in the user folder is because todays systems can have
more than one user so standards and good practice say that each user gets
copies of files that will be specific to him. For example, you will have
different settings (default flight, etc.) than someone else in your family.
As long as you each have different logins you don't stomp on each other's
configurations and preferences. If you both use the same login you can
fight over who did what <G>.

| Hello Dudley.
The next time you uninstall Flight Sim take a look at the
Mircosoft/games/flight sim folder befor you reinstall and see how much
is left in there.

| Good idea. What exactly does get left in there; add on's; installed scenery;
that type of thing???? Is it possible to uninstall FS9 in add remove
programs and reinstall it again without having everything you added to the
basic simulator taken out with it?
I have to admit it's a bit confusing as to just what is taken out with the
uninstall and what isn't. At first glance, one would think that anything
added to a base folder such as an add on aircraft would go out with that
folder during an uninstall process?

| Anything that is changed will be left. Theoretically if you've installed
add-ons and then uninstall FS you can simply reinstall FS and the add-ons
MAY work. As someone once said - YMMV <G>.

LOVE the "absolutes" and "certainties" of working with computers?
Why there's NEVER anything in doubt....EVER!!!
Why even if you manage to get the stuff in there without screwing something
up, and the system manages to deal with it without mangling it, changing it,
or crushing it into the black hole of the blue screen of death........have
no worries gang........it ain't lost yet.......that is not until the family
cat chews up and spits out the damn CD you saved it on!!!
I just LOVE working with computers!!!
