Let me start a friendly flame war with the OFFICIAL announcement that
according to Microsoft, Flight Simulator is a GAME and NOT a
sim......according to reliable sources (well Dallas really) the packaging of
the GAME Flight Simulator X states "GAMES FOR WINDOWS" at the top of the
front cover.........notice that it does NOT state Simulators for
Windows.........

Evidence is here:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...SXCover0001.jpg

IS this an intentional ploy to sell more copies to the gamer that likes
mindlessly shooting things?...........or an accidental slap in the face to
those people who like to think of their hobby as "More than just playing
videogames on my PC".........will we see Official expansion packs adding
collectable power ups (like anti-gravity, triple firing plasma cannons, and
remotely assisted auto-targetting drones) and will there be online
Deathmatches where you have to force your oppenents to crash???

[Dons flame retardent undies and awaits the fire]

Honestly though I was a little shocked to see it myself...........I think I
will stick with FS9.........Otherwise I can just imagine the missus laughing
at my "No honey I am NOT playing games again, acutally I am learning correct
approach procedures to a CAT III ILS runway........."

Ouu..sharpness control on that package!! )

Speaking of flak and flame-retandent kevies.. did y'all notice the logo
in the upper-left corner. Is that not an `eye´ with a four-bladed cutter
wheel in the middle? And note the pyramids at the bottom..is Ancient
Egyptian mysticism included at no extra charge? LOL

In a world where North Korea and Iran have atomic bombs it probably
doesn't matter too much whether FSX is a game or a simulation. Let the
games begin!

Once again, Gregory, you've left me in the dark. What is a
flame-retandent kevies?
..=2E....and how do you see the MS logo as a four-bladed cutter wheel?
You have a vivid imagination, good buddy, which is a pre-requisite to
be an effective simmer. Good for you.

It's hidden in plain view. Lookie-here at what we have in Springfield:

http://www.springfieldmuseums.org

The logo, ancient mysticism, sun rays, even home of the CAT!
Right across the street from the old temple hall, and down from
the 194 y/o Armory. Rifles for every war in the past two centuries.
That's all I can say about it really. Even more strange things are
going on around here. Can't go into it much -- No proof!

Have fun with your new game..I mean simulator. I'm going for a Sim
soon. Want to see some screencaps? { grin }

Yeah, I saw that little tag on the package. And with FSX, it IS a SIMULATION
game.(Capitals for emphasis, not shouting in this reply). As all the
previous versions of the sim, it was a true sim as far as the home market.
But this version has the missions that are actually a game within the sim.
So be it. I can live with it.
I have two ship simulators in my computer. Virtual Sailor 7, which
simulates the sailing characteristics of various ships, boats, submarines,
etc. My other one, Ship Simulator 2006, is more a game, with missions to
complete. I like 'em both. BUT, one is a true sim, the other just a game.
However, I think we have seen the last version of a true flight sim with
FS2004,FS9, ACOF.

Now hold it.. I'M NOT DONE YET!! Besides the stripe at the top that

Bleh.

FS has _always_ been a game. X-Plane, for example, is a simulator. It
*SIMULATES* flight by calculating actual flight data as you go.

FS just pops some purdy, theoretical, derived performance figures
through a few algorithms and comes up with a "best guess" of what a
plane "might" do under a "certain" condition (see: flying a 747
upside-down, and managing to overspeed in level flight. LEVEL FLIGHT!).
Just because it makes all the pretty little birds and cargo trucks
scurry about doesn't make it a simulation.

Unless you're to tell me you enjoy the "simulation" of sitting on your
XXX for hours on end with little to do but braid the cat or stare at the
(virtual) stewardess' XXX. Then, FS is a bang-on, uncanny resemblance to
reality.

Here's some more flame-bait. Just like the author of X-Plane dies at an
early age? Just like Ron Freimuth's house burns down after working on
a Mil FD!! How many guys die young? What percentage of houses catch
fire in America?

I have always tried to define the difference between a game and a
simulator is that in a game you win or lose and a simulator ,you just do
stuff until you get sick of it.

The definition got a bit blurred in Combat Flight Simulator when the
session was set to "first to 10 kills" or "Last man alive" but it didn't
really matter, I had a ball anyway.

Why are you ppl guessing? MS OFFICIALLY stated that FSX will lean more

I think it's to do with how you approach it. If you tear around
everywhere grass-cutting at max throttle until you crash everytime then
you're treating it as a game. If you plan your route, or fly by your
best approximation to real world procedure using charts and checklists,
then it's a simulator.

Eh Greg,

Have you worked out the subliminal message yet on the package.

You need to load it up into Photoshop, apply the correct filters
(*hush* can't say which ones here, he's watching you know!)

Rotate by a number degrees (again hush, I am sure you will work it
out).

Then inverse the image, and bang !

Scary or what eh....

Bit like Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band played backwards.

Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. SAY no more !
