Chatting to Regulars
|
|
| Ibby \(The Artist Formally Known as Chris\) 2005-08-23, 8:32 pm |
| I'm sure a lot of you regulars chat in private to each other
'off-the-forum'. I was wondering how many would be interested in setting up
a chat room. I always enjoy the 'banter' within this group, its always
informative, witty and can at times be opinionated. It can seem slow
though.
Any opinions about this or maybe a 'room' already exists. All could be made
welcome (except Simradar subscribers)!!

| Suppose time zones play a part with the 'on-the-fly' requirements. I have
no idea what companies provide chat rooms. I used to play around with MSN
chat a number of years ago but I think that died the death. Maybe Katy can
advise.
Ibby
p.s. Katy, where did you learn so much about computers? You seem very
educated in these matters and provide good technical assitance to this
group.

| Funny you mention this at the time the same thought crossed my mind
What i actually thought of: Would it be possible to arrange weekly fly-in's
at different airports around the world ? And at the same time the
participants could be in a chat room.
What is actually the best method to do multi-player flights in FS ? Is there
kind of an existing network where one just needs to connect and meets 100's
of online pilots ?
Would be nice

| It would be a bit like 'Ken's Car Park'. This is a carpark in our local
town where all the 'Boy Racers' go with their supped up
exhausts/stereos/alloys etc etc to show off. Imagine all of us hogging KJFK
with our windows down talking about our supped up mesh/texture/addon.
Sounds rather familar but would be good to see your virtual mates gliding in
for a chat and show off his new paint scheme.

| I've never flown online as I haven't advanced to broadband yet. I imagine
it could be done with the current servers out there like VATSim etc. Can't
really advise on that matter as no experience.

| 1. For online flightsim chat, try http://www.avsim.com/irc
2. For flying online, I highly recommend VATSIM or IVAO. A good place
to start, if you try VATSIM, is Santa Monica airport (KSMO). The
controllers there are very welcoming to newbies, and it's a great place
to get your feet wet.
3. You might also consider one of the virtual airlines (VAs) that
operates online: DC-3 Airways, VIVA (in Vancouver), or Bush Flying
Unlimited. There are lots of VAs, and I'm not slighting ones I don't
mention. These just strike me as ones where you can CHAT. The one I fly
for, Executive Fleet Services, is mostly oriented to VFR, but if you're
flying IFR it's not always "chattable." -- I know at least a couple of
us have missed calls from the controller because we were babbling away
on a private channel while he was giving us instructions. I've tried to
be more judicious since then, and also to be sensitive when I'm talking
with someone -- not to call up, for example, when he's in the approach
phase and likely to be getting instructions from a controller.

| Yes, FSHost is another great option. Lots of servers, and more oriented
toward interactions with other pilots than VATSIM or IVAO (where the
interaction with ATC is primary).
Another option is http://www.westcoastatc.com

| I'll second Vatsim and IVAO. As the original poster had a UK address,
checkout www.vatsim-uk.org We meet and chat using a programme called
TeamSpeak as well as flying together online with online ATC. See the
thread at http://www.vatsim-uk.org/forum/index.php?topic=4227.0
Most regions host regular flyins - the main website at www.vatsim.net has
links to the regional websites with more details, and there's also lots of
information on the forums (links from the home page)

While the second half of this thread is geared for fly in meets and
suchlike, for just a chatter with the regulars on here, why not try Paltalk?
Its a dedicated voice chat program with text chat and has multiple rooms
covering all sorts of topics. Anyone can open a room and name it to
something relevant, its a free program, small download and quite easy to
use.
Just a suggestion, would be great to chat real time with the regulars here.
Paltalk can be found at http://www.paltalk.com/
Cheers

You *used* to work for them then?
I specifically remember someone mentioning something like that a few years
back. Maybe it was just some beta-testing or brainstorming you did for 'em.
MS_MVP stands for MicroSoft_Most Valuable Professional, doesn't it?
Now....you wouldn't be so vain as to give that title to yourself, now would

Yes, been an MVP since 1999 but being an MVP has nothing to do with
working *for* Microsoft: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/
I am happy to have met with most members of the FS team and could
beta-test FS2002 and FS2004 but that's about it, my main interaction
about FS - apart from Project Magenta - is with users in the

What do you reckon to the gathering calls of voice talk, asking for VOICE
community FS2004 chat, rather than what we do just now? : )
It would be great to hear and talk with the likes of You ... and say Dudley

FSHost is fun. You can setup a hop list that simmers either must or can
follow. The server will remember the last hop for every simmer that joined.
It's even fun to fly alone with a fshost server just because you can follow
those hops.
But there are a couple of things to consider. As mentioned earlier the
different timezones in which we live our real lives is one thing. Also, if
the hoplist is long, you will most of the time fly alone on a specific hop.
If is is too short, you might get bored too soon. Of course running a server
is often a 24/7 business (I cannot find your Hakubi's server right now shu,
that's Wednesday august 24 09:00 GMT)
You can use a program called fshostspy to check which servers are online and
how many have pilots flying.
I tried to copy and paste part of the fshostspy output in this message, but
that doesn't work. So you'll have to take my word for it: most of the time
there are far more servers running than pilots active.
But if you are running your server shu I'd be happy to join: it'll give your
medics a chance of some virtual training ;)
Gerard
BTW: fshost and fshostspy are both postcardware: a really good bang for the
buck.

Okay...so you work *with* them. :-)
So you've basically been flying home flightsims since they were first
invented, you've flown them on all sorts of different computers,
experimented with settings and tested add-ons.
Does that about sum it up?
BTW...what aircraft were you sitting in when that picture was taken?

We had an irc chat channel running for awhile on freenode but it seems
to have died off. Right now a few of us are hanging out in
#generalchat on irc.avsim.net
Would be great to see some of the regulars in the group here join the
